Great podcast overall. Fantastic guests, generally good questions. My only complaints are the extra chit chat and the hosts talking about themselves a bit too much. I would love it if it was more focused on the content and the guests. I feel like there is a lot more that could be learned in each episode if it weren’t for all the added banter.

I just discovered this podcast after searching for native plants. I have learned so much that I am putting into use in my yard. I also learned about great native plant resources. I search through old episodes and have pick relevant topics to listen to. Thank you for making this available. I love the harmonica and pet stories. Hosts and guest are chill and knowledgeable. Looking forward to next new episode.

I am new to this wonderful podcast, only learning about it via an introduction of John McGee by Nancy Vehrs, President of the Virginia Native Plant Society (I am a member and former board member) for a talk he gave as part of a Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden webinar series. I am thoroughly enjoying it, not only as the owner of one of Virginia’s dedicated Natural Area Preserves (Naked Mountain in Nelson County), but also as a largely Arlington resident (when not on NM) trying to restore a small woodland in our back yard. The task is immensely rewarding and the Native Plant Podcast an informative as well as delightful companion.

Why is someone clicking their mouse in the background? Checking emails during the podcast? It is very distracting and makes me think someone is not interested in the topic. I have heard this on several podcast lately.

I’m excited for the new season! This show has been my gardening companion for the past three years or so when I started getting into natives, and I appreciate the energy and general kindness behind it.

This used to be my most anticipated gardening podcast prior to 2020, but the show has struggled to find its voice this season with rotating guest hosts - none of which have the on-air chemistry of Mike and John from previous seasons. The topics have ventured further away from the native North American plants that drew me in years ago. I miss the phenology discussions at the beginning of the episodes and the jovial banter between two old plant nerds - even when the editing and sound quality was poor. I will continue to listen to some of the “classic” reruns from previous years, but I hope the show can return to form and focus on the natives that the title advertises.

The most easygoing, informative discussion of horticulture and native plants. Love these guys’ vibes. I can almost taste their beer, almost feel the light breeze on the porch by the woods.

Great show! I love learning about the landscape ideas for native plants. I’m a Wildlife Biologist by education so I have a firm grasp on what plants help animals (pollinators includes) but I lack the skills for implementing these crucial plants in a suburban landscape form in a way as to not scare the neighbors ha ha. This show is helping me. More landscape tips and tricks using natives would be much appreciated. Keep up the great work! - Tim Simmons

Enjoy hearing John and Preston’s personalities as they teach abut horticulture and ecology with the help of experts guests. The harmonica opening and closing, the stories of pets and the final toast (and I don’t even drink alcohol) makes one feel among relaxed friends.

Perhaps it’s an oversight when they set up the podcast with Apple, but my iPhone won’t let me subscribe or listen because the “podcast contains explicit content” and I would have to change the global setting on my phone to allow it. My wife has the passcode to the content settings on my iPhone and she’s not always around to turn it on and off, so I’ll have to pass. Too bad. I’m pretty passionate about using natives in my gardening.

Listening to several episodes today on what is typically a very boring drive through north-central Iowa made the time pass by very quickly! John’s voice seems quieter than others; that would be my only suggestion to change. I love the toast at the end! Keep up the good work.

This is a nice show that my dad enjoys. He’s in the native plant society here in Texas. But PLEASE hire a competent sound engineer. Or at least have someone whether it’s a producer or otherwise fix the sound levels. If not at the time of recording, which would probably be easier, then in post. It’s super annoying to have to constantly adjust volume. I can’t imagine trying to listen to this in my car. Fix this and we’ll bump it up a bit. Thanks!

Just started listening to them a few weeks ago and really enjoy listening to them. Lots of great info and guests. Definitely one of my few favorite podcasts about plants. The best I’ve heard so far on natives. I’ve now listened to basically every podcast they’ve released and followed them on Facebook. It’s still one of my favorite podcasts.

This podcast is great and I love the topics and the discussion. I wish it were a bit more academic with some scientific research and links to citations, and perhaps a little less hokey with the joking around. But overall, it’s a good show with worthy topics. I also wish they would improve the audio. Guests are often too hard to hear while the hosts’ volumes are often much louder. Takes constantly riding the volume control to be able to comfortably listen to the show.

I love this show! Always very informative and funny at times. Well put together. Very interesting topics. Never dull.. Great interviews. I especially like the end where they tell pet stories and have a beverage. I look forward to each episode! Keep up the good work guys!

1. Informative. These guys know their stuff. Plus, the guests are great. 2. Funny. Sprinkling of humor is always a good thing. 3. Beer. Each show ends with a toast to local microbrews. Spectacular. Ideas for future topics: native alternatives instead of getting typical nursery plants (showiness, long bloom time, etc.), natives for honeybees (I know they are not native themselves, but I want to plant natives that they will forage on), and a tutorial series for those of us beginning to venture into growing natives from seeds (stratification, how best to germinate, etc.). Keep up the good work.

I enjoy listening to podcast while at work. I also enjoy landscaping with a purpose- food, birds, water control. If you have any questions they guys are quick to answer. They give you ideas you might not have thought of like a winter garden. :)

If you live in eastern US and enjoy gardening, this podcast is fantastic. Even if you don't live there, many of their guests expertise is universal. Plus they talk about beer and dogs. It couldn't be better.

I really appreciate these gentlemen. Living in Louisiana, there's not a lot of representation for native plants/progressive landscaping, but NPP offers a wealth of information from the midSouth region. I work at a small urban forestry nonprofit, and love the wide range and digestibility of each episode. Keep up the great work!

So glad I found this podcast. Guest list is a who's who of the native plant industry and each show is ended with a beer. What's not to like? I've been expanding my own native plant nursery all winter and I catch up on old episodes while I work. Whether you're a native plant geek or just into gardening, check these guys out and expand your horizons!

What more could you ask for? I LOVE the show and look forward to it every week. These guys are so knowledgeable but on top of that HILARIOUS!!! They have amazing guests that are the rock-stars of horticulture. I love the longer format which allows them to get more in depth in the discussions. The shows always end with pet updates and a beer tasting. It makes me smile to hear about the misadventures of their beloved dogs. After the pet updates they do the beer tasting. They have turned me onto some great beers too. Like I said...what more could you ask for?

I am very happy to have found this podcast. These guys are great and you will learn so much from the people they bring bring in as well.

Met John & his wife Susana years ago volunteering at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. John and I share the same starting influence in native plants, Susan Wolfe.
