The Daily Zeitgeist

News #231

There’s more news and less comprehension today than any historical period that didn’t involve literal witch trials, and trying to stay on top of it all can feel like playing a game of telephone with 30 people, except everyone’s speaking at the same time and like a third of them are openly racist for some reason. From Cracked co-founder Jack O’Brien, THE DAILY ZEITGEIST is stepping into that fray with some of the funniest and smartest comedic and journalistic minds around. Jack and co-host Miles Gray spend up to an hour every weekday sorting through the events and stories driving the headlines, to help you find the signal in the noise, with a few laughs thrown in for free.

The 6/27/24 show with Ms. Pat was a delight. Thank you for the much needed laughs.

    Meh
Some of the worst voices in podcasting. More importantly, both hosts are pretty ignorant of things outside their interests.

    My Daily Fix
This show is awesome. Jack & Miles are great hosts and the behind the scenes team does a great job filling in the third seat guests! I listen M-F on my way to work.

    Stenographer here
Stenographer here. Stenography is the hardest job in the world. $4.75 a page is not even the top page rate in the country. Taking down this trial and getting the pages out daily is going to be extremely difficult. Imagine being a stenograpgher when Trump gets on stand ! Stenography is a difficult to learn, low pass rate, extremely specialized skill and these workers deserve those rates.

    I Like It
I haven’t actually listened to very many yet, but I do really like the question they ask the guest about recent search history and under-rated and over-rated things because it can lead to surprising and entertaining answers.

    Terrorists don’t like this show?
Reading the reviews, it seems this show used to be liked by Hamas supporters since they have buzzed off, maybe I’ll listen to it.

    Disappointed after years of listening
I’ve loved this show for a really long time, it cheers me up every morning. But hearing that Jack & Miles were at SXSW is really disappointing. Plenty of artists pulled out to support Palestine, and I’m sure that some part of that decision is above them, but it’s disappointing to know that they attended an event sponsored by the military industrial complex.

I love TDZ, Jack and Miles make me chuckle multiple times a week… but the ads on IheartRadio MAKE ME FULL OF RAGE. They keep getting worse. MAKE IT STOP, IHEART. CHUMBA CASINO AND RYAN SEACREST NEED TO STOP!!!!!!

    Getting out of touch
I have loved this show for nearly 10 years. Jack and Miles are both wonderful hosts, great personalities, and they bring in great guests. However… lately, I’ve been getting a weird vibe from the show. they (and Jack in particular) seem to have some big blind spots for some extremely major parts of pop culture, and seem pre-programmed to be very dismissive of subject matter they aren’t already fans of, regardless of how good or popular it might be. Politically, I also feel like they have strayed into un-alloyed cynicism. I used to appreciate their lefty, but unvarnished opinion on the political sphere. Lately, it seems to be exclusively about dunking on Biden, without enough recognization of the much more urgent issue of the rise of fascism. They even seem to conflate the two at times. I don’t love Biden, but this is maddening. If you’re going to criticize him, I would like to hear, in the same breath, an alternative opinion of what they believe people should most effectively do or vote for. It just seems cheap to mock him (the most effective liberal president in recent decades) without acknowledging the accomplishments or emphasizing the horrors of the alternative. I used to listen earnestly every weekday, and I still do mostly, but now I find myself rolling my eyes half the time. And I don’t think it’s me that has changed. I wouldn’t go so far as to call them ‘elites’, but it seems like a symptom of coastal liberalism. And I’m more leftist than liberal, who lives in the center of America. Jack and Miles seem to LOVE dunking on mainstream liberals, which is fine, but it really feels like they are MISSING THE BIG PICTURE lately.

    Love the show but…
I’m actually really liking the new format and having experts on is really refreshing. But…I really wish they would put more effort into not falling for old biases and stereotypes. I’m all for a good Taylor swift joke (Trevor Noah Grammys) but recently all the criticism is based in old misogynistic jokes about her dating life and shallow takes on her work. It makes me hesitate taking their opinions on other things in high regard. Really lost respect for you guys there.

    Used to be good
Used to like the pod before they became cowards. Neither of the hosts mention what is happening in Palestine, it is treated like an afterthought when it should be headlining every episode. So much respect lost for them. Jack was fearless at cracked but he’s lost it.

Love TDZ!! Esp when they have unique guests like Zahra Noorbakhsh. Great convos!

    ‘summer’ format change
i like the show but preferred the old format, this used to be a news show. you can tell they recently started prerecording all the episodes (sometimes days in advanced, like the monday episodes) and they feel outdated with old/incorrect info. i’m hopeful they go back to the old, daily format

    Underrated pod
This podcast feels like a safe haven while living in small town America. Being able to listen to leftist perspectives while being surrounded by ultra conservatives helps me not feel so insane. My drive to work wouldn’t be the same without this podcast. I start almost everyday listening to Jack and Miles. The pod only gets better with time and they always have great guests! #lilzamb #mudlark

    In Defense of the Format
If you’re looking for a perspective you haven’t heard, this is your show. These two really get it. They have guests who really get it. They have a way of talking about the happenings - good and bad, national and global - with a truly unique blend of herbs and spices. While I miss starting my week with TDZ on Monday mornings, I truly enjoy the longer Weektrendz episodes and the expert episodes. The time, energy, and thoughtfulness they put into the show is evident in every episode. ESPECIALLY WHEN MANIACS LIKE CROFTON AND WEXLER ARE ON! There’s a bit of a learning curve to really get into it, but spend the time. There are dividends to be had.

    Please no more Crofton
I would rate it 5 stars, but the Crofton episodes are literally the bane of my existence. He’s not funny and he derails the news that I’m trying to listen to. Just my opinion I understand, but holy crap he is annoying.
  • Perkins.C
I wish the guest knew something about the show they’re on.
The show seems to flow the best when the guest have any sort of prep work. I love how they’re branching out from only doing LA based comedians. I just wish the expert guessed bothered to care as much as the comedians. When a guest is surprised about the intro aka’s or the shrieks it’s not a good sign. The shows are like 40 minutes long without ads. Is it crazy to expect a little bit of preparation?

Listened from day one. No longer a daily news/current event podcast. With the changed format & inconsistency I have lost interest. Bummed this was my favorite.

    Homophonic
I’ve been listening for years but lately they’ve been adding their basketball podcast in the same feed as TDZ. I’ve tolerating it since I can skip around those episodes, but today I was listening and interrupted by 30 seconds of 3 heteronormative men gawking over Mile’s baby. That’s the last straw. Obviously this podcast suddenly hates gay people. The disrespect, for real. [Update: There was significant discussion of the sounds a boner makes. You’ve won me back with the in-depth analysis I’m looking for in a posh podcast. ]

I’ve been here since literally day one but…
I can’t do it anymore. Episode uploads have become very inconsistent and untimely. They completely changed the format of the show. It’s not even “daily” anymore and most stuff is pre recorded. Have they just given up?

    "News" about boiling potatoes
A news broadcast that spent significant time discussing the intricacies of boiled potatoes and other breakfast potato dishes in a recent episode. Spoke about mugshots without knowing if all mugshots had actually been released. BUT IT WAS TRENDING ONLINE!

    Love this show!
I’m really enjoying all the guest hosts/guests to cover Miles and Jack’s respective leaves. Congrats on the Geist-child, Miles! Always appreciate Becca Ramos’ appearances on trending and the long show. Side note, I could listen to a podcast about the takedown of Mayor Max if Andrew is looking for more show ideas. Miles and Jack are my best parasocial friends. When one or the other is missing, my daily walk is :( but they often have amazing guest cohosts or just amazing guests and it makes my day better hearing them.

    Best Daily Podcast
My favorite way to stay up to date on national news, tempered with fun pop-culture happenings to keep things from being too gloom and doom. I’ve discovered almost all of my favorite podcasts from checking out fun guests from this show. I’ve been listening for about 5 years and it’s always entertaining and informative, and remains respectful and nuanced in discussion of the serious topics as well. Miles and Jack (and all of the awesome guest hosts) seem genuinely curious and kind when they ask questions of their guests and I’m always impressed by the diverse backgrounds of those on the show.

    Best start of my day
I have been listening since the beginning in 2017 and idk how I could start my day any other way. The stories Miles and Jack cover open me up to so many things I didn’t know, and it is presented in a way that I relate to. It’s funny!

    A must
I wake up and listen every weekday. I don’t know what to do with myself on the days it doesn’t air due to a holiday 🤍
  • Kdndmercury
Not bad but may need retooling
This podcast isn’t for everyone. I would criticize some of the “woke” dialog and a recent segment that was somewhat disrespectful to older people. The basis of the comments was that grandparents have had their time and have no idea what’s happening on the streets. This may be true in some circumstances but it’s certainly a broad generalization. There’s no shortage of liberal podcasts where the hosts criticize conservatives and this is no exception. Conservatives can be moderate and socially aware. Perhaps the hosts could consider that and not alienate this portion of their listeners. Full disclosure, I am 49 and consider myself a conservative. Otherwise this podcast is entertaining and can be a fun way to stay current.

Why does Miles always get to monopolize! His opinion
yesterday September 26 one touched a wonderful show because Miles was not among the studio. Yesterday with your dad and TJ Dental was still equally shared. I don’t understand why Jack and I guess iHeart in this mess miles gobble up all the air time. I enjoy this podcast every day and all day I have to turn it off because I get so sick of hearing from Miles. Way too imbalanced.

Enjoy the show, would love to not have junk dropped in my feed
Could you guys stop dropping Miles and Jack Got Mad Boosties in the feed? It was one thing when you were first trying to get ears on it, then I kind of understood keeping it around during post season excitement, but at this point we're 20 some weeks in to you guys still dropping it in the TDZ feed. If I wanted to listen to it, I'd have subscribed by now.
