We share resources that we found tremendously helpful for understanding our birthing options. We confess the magic and craziness in preparing for pregnancy, home birth, motherhood and fatherhood. We talk about having sex while pregnant and maintaining your connection and intimacy as a couple. We reveal how to stay centered and not lose yourself through pregnancy, and tons more! This show is all about adding an empowered conversation to the topic of home birth and natural birth, while keeping it real, grounded and fun. So strap in and join us as we’re doing it at home!

Thank you for a wonderful 8 years of beautiful content
You both played a huge role in my home birth journey and journey into becoming a birth worker. Forever blessed, your podcast will be so missed but I will be praying for all the adventures to come for your family! 🩷

    Binging the episodes
I am having a water birth in a birthing center in Mexico, which is wayyyy different than where I had originally thought I would deliver my first baby. But the more I educate myself on home births/birth centers the more I know this is the way for me. I’m so happy to have found your podcast, and am feeling increasingly informed and empowered to delivery my baby boy in Feb 2024! Thank you 1000x over for giving me my nightly source of binge-worthy content 🙏🏼💙

    WHAT A GREAT RESOURCE
I love this podcast so much. Very insightful and I can’t recommend to my clients.

    Love this podcast
Love this podcast I look forward to listening a new episode every week. Sarah and Matthew are a breath of fresh air. I have not had a home birth but I have had 4 natural births in 3 different countries Canada, U.S.A and Germany. Germany was by far the best experience I delivered at the most famous birth clinic in the country and I was fully supported in a beautiful physiological water birth by the most amazing midwife….

    Helpful Home Birth Stories
Most of the episodes are helpful stories or interviews, though sometimes there’s a guest who shares inaccurate info. But overall a can be a good resource for gaining confidence in birth. Sometimes seems like the hosts feel they’re supposed to say something profound but instead end up throwing a lot of word salad around. I’ve noticed it’s strange that several times an episode they say “let’s take a quick break and hear from our sponsors” then it literally goes right back to the interview. There aren’t sponsors and it’s so odd that’s put in there or not edited out. The self promos and business updates at the beginning are understandable since it’s their podcast but sometimes go on and on for 5-10 minutes.

Skip to minute 10 to get to the content
Understandable that there are promotions at the beginning, but I was disappointed to be 10 minutes in and still not at the conversation they said the podcast was about. 😅

    In the middle
So, I’ve followed Sarah Bivens awhile now. I’m glad that there is another voice added to the birth world . Different perspectives and opinions do matter in birth, so that you can form your own stance through that. However, this podcast is geared more in the middle. Free birth and wild birth is never mentioned. It’s only about home birth with midwives and doulas V.S a hospital birth. When in reality there are other sides and options to birth. Midwives and doulas are not the only option, and I wish that was discussed more so other people could know.

Love the podcast. Hosts need some coaching on Hosting.
I love your podcast and have learned so much from it. But man… You guys could really use some coaching on how to host a podcast. Your interviews are so full of long, awkward silence pauses. The people you’re interviewing are not professional story tellers, you need to help them tell their story by prompting them, acknowledging their words, asking a question here or there, or even just summarizing what they shared. Otherwise you end up with long drawn out stories. Or you get someone so passionate, they literally never stop talking and you’re giving us 1 hour of someone ranting.

    Love it!
This was the first home birth podcast I found/listened to, and it still is my favorite after over a year of listening!

    Awesome Resource!
I am so thankful for the Doing it at Home podcast! My husband and I planned for a home birth as soon as we found out we were pregnant. (Unfortunately baby had other ideas, and a hospital transfer was medically necessary, after over 24 hours of labor.) The variety of birth stories that are featured on this podcast gave me confidence and peace, when my birth plan suddenly shifted to baby’s birth plan. I hope that our next birth, baby can safely arrive in our home. Until then, I look forward to hearing all the stories here. Every birthing person is so strong, I celebrate each and every new life that’s brought into this world! Thank you for this safe space Sarah and Matthew!

    Great home birth resource
Such a great resource if you are looking to learn more about home births. Not only is it beneficial for the woman giving birth but also the birthing partner. As the birthing partner for our home birth, I truly believe that the woman needs to have that support and this podcasts touches on ways the birthing partner can be there for the woman.

    Must listen!
This podcast creates a wonderful space for birthing people/partners to share their stories and share their experiences so that others can learn and benefit. Sarah and Matthew do an amazing job holding space for people to share. And the experts they interview provide such valuable insight as well. A very well rounded podcast that makes me feel less “on an island” as someone pursuing homebirth. And an excellent resource for those wanting to learn more about homebirth.

    Empowering
If there is one word to best describe this podcast it would be “empowering.” I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea to choose home birth but for those that do often find themselves judged, ridiculed or questioned by people that are simply not informed correctly. This was the first podcast I subscribed to back in 2017 when I found out about podcasts. I had just finished “The Business of Being Born” which opened up my mind about home birth. I love how raw, real, and relatable Sarah and Matthew are and I appreciate what they have created. I totally recommend this, specially if you’re curious about what home birth can look like through many unique stories that people bring here.

A beautiful light in a world of unknown
Sarah and Matthew have created such a beautiful space to learn about an area of birth that is often looked down on or questioned with concern. It is so healing and educational to learn from others and that is exactly what they are doing with this podcast. I love how every episode is unique and how we can learn from each one more and more. Thank you for never holding back and being vulnerable. That is how we can learn as mamas in training what to expect and how to best prepare. What a beautiful space.

    Love. Love. Love.
I had a super negative birth experience in a hospital with my son. When we found out we were pregnant. I cried even thinking about going back to a hospital. After talking to my husband we settled on a birth centre. I take so much away from this podcast. I’m not doing it at home but this podcast has educated me and gave me so much insight on all perspectives. I will continue to listen as long as you guys are around!

Such a great resource for any birthing person!
I found this podcast a couple years ago and there is truly nothing else out there quite like it. As a doula/birth junky/mama this get 5 stars across the board. I recommend it regularly to all my friends, family, and clients.

    Thank you!
This podcast helped me prep for my home birth and it’s unexpected twists and turns! Thank you for not only normalizing and demystifying homebirth, but for also hosting intersectional birth conversations.

    Empowered meets informed
Where do I begin with praise for Doing it at Home??? Oh how I LOVE this podcast. From the authentic and playful nature of both Sarah and Matthew to the deep dive into all things birth related, there is so much value offered by this show. Both the stories of birth and the conversations with birth workers and thought leaders offers increased awareness around empowerment of the birthing person and making informed choices regarding birthing. This show unequivocally shines a light on what a miracously beautiful and transformational experience birth can be, while also holding space for the fear and trauma that exists in the birth world. It is such a valuable source of insight and resource to those considering home birth. Holding the space for women to share their birth stories is a gift to those who share and those who listen, thank you for creating such a space!

As a Doula and home birthed myself, I love this podcast!
Not only are the guest inspirational and have vastly different stories to share but the the hosts are great! There banter back and forth and comments and questions for the guests really sets their podcast apart from others!

    REAL CONVERSATIONS
Sarah and Matthew have real, loving conservations about resources and options. There is no fear mongering, unlike a lot the birth world in today's society. If you are someone that is curious about an out of hospital birth, I'd definitely recommend listending to a few of their episodes. Full of good information and stories.
  • lulunickname
    Not active conversation
Both the female and male podcast hosts reply with “that’s powerful” to almost everything someone says. seems like they’re not even listening to the people being interviewed. They ask ZERO questions about the actual birth experience. They talk around it most of the time.

    Best Birthing Podcast EVER
Sarah and Matthew are so amazing and fun to listen to, and have the best home birth/birthing content. Even if you aren’t planning a homebirth, I highly recommend this podcast. The stories, the guests, the content, and especially the hosts are TOP NOTCH! Love this podcast!
  • yo homie lilz
    Well rounded
I started listening to this podcast during my first pregnancy and even more after as I realized how inclusive it is for ALL births and promotes empowering women without subscribing to the “one best way or place to birth” like many other home birth podcast. They advocate for home birth and that more women know it is an option yet show that it’s not always the best option for everyone and that every women should be able to have the best birth no matter how or where that is.

    The BEST podcast around!
I have been a long time listener of the podcast and have heard every single episode, some more than once. I absolutely love hearing the variant of stories from powerful mamas bringing their babies earth side as well as the real ness and truth that Sarah and Matthew bring to each episode. I am also exceptionally grateful for the online Facebook community that they have created which has been a wealth of knowledge and resources as I navigate my first pregnancy! Thank you both for all that you do for the home birth community!

    Great podcast!
I listened to the first several episodes until it became clear that, unfortunately, we were not going to be able to have a home birth. Nevertheless, I really benefited from exploring the topic, and this podcast was a big part of my exploration. I also think that knowing our priorities helped us choose a good hospital and doctor for our birth, and everything went well. Sarah and Matthew are funny, honest, and always bring a positive view to everything. Keep up the great work!

    Love to see them grow!
I’ve been listening to y’all for years and every year you get more informative!! So wise! I love the unassisted birthing guests you have on, I loved the partnership episode, I love your guys’ relationship. ❤️

Sarah and Matthew speak so much love and truth!
I have been listening to your podcast for nearly 2 years and have listened to every episode. I love how passionate you all about life, each other and especially home birth, but specifically about inspiring families to make the informed choices that best suit their families. My partner and I are hoping to conceive our first bio babe this fall and listening to your podcast has helped to influence our dedication to a free birth at home. My partner loves the podcast too and we both think you guys are awesome and hilarious! Thanks for the magic!

    5 stars!!!
Sarah and Matthew have created such an awesome space for expecting mothers to be able to connect with the stories of others and gain some secondhand experience and advice. Even if you’re not pregnant, the episodes are so enjoyable to listen to and this husband wife duo feel so relatable and real. Definitely a must subscribe podcast!

    Very informative podcast!
I’m a 24 year old mom to two beautiful daughters ages 5 and 1.5. My first daughter was an “emergency” caesarean after an unnecessary induction. I wish I had had your podcast back then to listen to because I’m sure the outcome would have been much different if I had planned a homebirth. My second daughter was a successful VBAC with midwives at a hospital, and while I was so happy to have had a VBAC, it certainly was not the peaceful birth that I envisioned. If my husband and I have more kids, I will definitely be planning a homebirth, largely because of your podcast. I’m currently finishing up my doula certifications, and I suggest your podcast to all of my clients regardless of if they’re giving birth in the hospital, birth center, or at home. Your podcast helps so many women to take control of their birth and become more empowered, so thank you for everything that you guys do! Sincerely, Rea Mahan

    You guys are the best
Discovered you Podcast through Instagram.... I’m 21 and my man and I are not quite ready for babies but I’ve been a birth junkie forever. I love hearing friends and families tales of birth and I already know I want to have a midwife and give birth at home or in a birth center. Your podcast has given me so much and given me so much info and confidence and makes me so excited to experience this life changing season of life that pregnancy and birth is!
  • Jksimm2
    Very empowering!
I’ve discovered this podcast as I recently switched from hospital to home birth around 28 weeks with my second baby given all of the uncertainty with coronavirus. I’ve been doing a lot of mental, visual, and physical prep (chiropractic, Hypnobirthing, pelvic floor physical therapy, Spinning Babies, etc) to help make this birth wonderful, and the birth stories through this podcast have been incredibly inspiring. I find that I itch to listen to at least one episode a day! The conversations flow beautifully and the hosts are wonderful. I feel that this podcast is great even for those who aren’t planning a home birth, but are being thoughtful and intentional about their birthing mindset. Highly recommend!

    Find your tribe
I listened to this show lots when pregnant with my second babe getting ready for a home birth. It felt like sitting and chatting over tea with good friends who were going through a very similar experience to my own. The conversations flow easily and are evidently a joy for all involved. I appreciate the dedication of Sarah and Matt to providing this platform for information sharing and connection!!

    Exceptional podcast!
This podcast is brilliant! A wonderful resource for parents considering birth outside of the hospital or anyone who just wants to know more about home birth. After listening to other birth related podcasts, I found DIAH and was instantly hooked. I’ve listened to every episode more than once. This podcast and all the stories shared on this platform gave me the confidence to give birth where I felt most comfortable, AT HOME. Sarah and Matthew are open, honest, funny, and easy to listen to. Check out their other podcasts as well, if you haven’t already. They are fantastic at what they do! Keep educating and inspiring others! Thank you!

    Thank you Sarah & Matthew
Love this Podcast! This was the first resource I came across when planning for my second baby’s birth. The information, education, and birth stories are so inspiring! The content is helpful no matter where you plan to give birth. It also led me to my other favorite birth resources which played a huge part in my birth and birthing choices (Hypnobabies, Gentle Birth Gentle Mothering, and Evidence Based Birth). Although I wanted to have a Home Birth, we planned a free standing birth center birth due to spouses and insurance preference. As it turned out, I did get my Home Birth (before the Midwives arrived!) due to a much faster labor than my first. Home birth is just the best! Thank you Sarah & Matthew for providing a great resource, normalizing home birth, and entertaining us with your Podcast!
  • Heidsms
So thankful for your home birth stories!
Just listened to my first episode! So empowering and wonderful to see a platform and voice for women and couples who choose home birth. Xoxo

Thank you for NORMALIZING home birth.
For me, home birth is normal. But most people think that it's dangerous and scary. Most people also want to feel good about their birth experience. I wish for people to discover how safe, satisfying and healing birth can be when you are supported in the comfort of your home. Thank you for the work you do!

    Favorite pregnancy/birth podcast!
I am not a momma quite yet but we will be trying to conceive soon and this podcast has been my favorite to listen to lately! Home birth has always been a topic that I LOVE to explore. I’ve spent so much time reading birth stories and watching birth videos and this podcast was exactly what I was looking for! It’s inspiring, informative, and open to all pregnancy journeys and experiences! I am so happy I found the DIAH podcast and I look forward to listening to this podcast with my husband, as well as when I am entering the pregnancy experience! Grateful for you both!!

Where have these two educated, fun, experienced, down-to-earth, real-life lovers been all my life? These two bring you information in the raw about home birth as they, and others, have experienced it. It’s a great place to start your exploration about ALL your options as you enter the beautiful, natural, empowering journey of birthing your little ones. Thanks diah!!!

    Love the “impossible stories”
I’m new to this show and have one baby already who I have given birth at a hospital to. I was aiming to have a birth center birth, but was told I was too “high risk.” Come this pregnancy, I have the same complications, but planning a home birth. This podcast gives me hope, and helping build trust in my body’s ablility! I love hearing the other “impossible” stories! Keep up the good work!!

    Exactly what I needed
I am fairly new to the show and have gone WAYYYYY back to the beginning to start. I'm finding the episodes SO relevant and helpful! It's funny because earlier this week I posted in an online mommy group that we were planning our home birth for our 4th baby. I've had one "give me all the drugs" birth, two natural hospital births, and if/when we are blessed to get pregnant again are DIAH. Some specific points So after posting in the mommy group it actually spiraled into a secondary thread with hundreds of comments people calling me "selfish, negligent, stupid, etc". I was listening to your post about what NOT to say to a home birth mom and omg...it was like you read the thread 😂 I also listened to the interview with your midwife and wow, so relatable. My first natural hospital birth was fabulous. It really was as close to a home birth as I feel like you can get. My most recent son though was fast and furious. I actually delivered him in triage but it was a mess. They were so adamant on monitors, and keeping me on the bed, etc. They even questioned if I was actually in labor (my water already broke), and when I went from 7-10 in two contractions they tried to convince me that he wasn't there even though I was feeling the pressure of my body pushing him out... They gave me the most uncomfortable check of my life! Word for word how your midwife spoke on hospital births. Especially after having my wonderful experience i was like wow, I want THAT birth back! So we decided home is the way to go. Anyways I had to share since those episodes REALLY spoke to me. I can't wait to catch up with you guys and hear about it all :)

    TRUST YOUR BODY!!!
And release control!!! Hi Sarah and Matthew! I am so in love with this most recent episode with Laura Jean. I got teary-eyed a couple of times. I’m definitely in the camp of those for whom a birth experience led me to more body-listening, body-trusting, and body-respecting - especially with regard to food and sexuality. I’m so excited about this path and where my body will lead me, and listening helped me realize that I’ve already done a lot of healing. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone interested in birth, although there’s something here for everyone!

    Love love love love love
I am absolutely in love with this podcast. I have been binge listening while in the car, at work, grocery shopping and at home. Ever since my husband and I decided to grow our family once again (10 years after our first) I started to listen from episode 001 to the current uploads. Although we are not planning on doing it at home, I am finding so many resources and empowering and educational discussions around birth that will help both of us in this journey all because of this podcast. I love hearing other people’s birth stories, especially of the dads. It helps me realize who I am and what I fear, as well as ways to overcome those fears. These discussions and hearing other people’s stories helps me to know all the ways a plan can change or not go the way you wanted. It prepares me to go with the flow and have an idea or goal but know that the ultimate goal is for our child to come into this earth safe and sound, no matter how that looks. So again, thank you Matthew and Sarah for creating this amazing resource of encouragement and empowerment for me and many others to feed from. I really appreciate it!

Safe headspace for pregnant, natural momma!
Hello Bivens, thank you so much for creating this safe, positive, loving, silly and informative space for pregnant and postpartum mommas / parents to listen to wonderful birth stories and interviews. This podcast is just what I needed to find in these last few weeks before I give birth for the first time & have just pivoted from hospital >> home birth. I needed a community to learn more and feel supported with my and my husbands choice for home birth. Now I feel so much more confident about our choice and it’s been easier to tune-out the societal fear around birth. THANK YOU! Hope we can share our story with you someday soon! :) - Katie
