Even if you don’t care about some of the bands these mighty gents touch upon, their surgical precision to dissecting and breaking down the most essential elements of each artists contributions. This podcast has turned me onto so many bands that I had never heard, and ended up going down the rabbit hole on several, and have found new favorite bands and albums. Thank ye mighty gents, you are doing the Word’s Lork.

From the days of symposium zine thru metal maniacs,I’ve always dug Jeff Wagner’s point of view. This show is fantastic,even for an old curmudgeon like myself. The interplay between Hunter & Jeff is great,Mr.Ginn brings a lot to the table & the episodes fly by. They have pointed me towards some gems I have missed-which is one of life’s great joys. These guys truly know their stuff. It’s eclectic and thoughtful. Wish there was a little bit more divergence in opinion, but that isn’t a huge problem. Guests would be welcomed and hitting more of the Norway bands they worship with depth. Hail to the weirdos! PS cover Meads of Asphodel!

Stumbled upon this podcast recently when searching for Spiral Architect on Spotify when I discovered my copy wasn’t on my phone. This is everything I’ve been looking for - deep dives into some of the cornerstones of my musical journey with two excellent and knowledgeable hosts. I’ve only gotten into a few episodes so far, but am looking forward to jumping into the rest of it. P.S. I’m a Skoll mark too - how about an episode on my favorite album of all time, La Masquerade Infernale? A man can dream, anyway :D

This podcast is excellent for fans of heavy and/or extreme artists who are receptive to more progressive strains of music as well. The hosts seem suspiciously inclined to agree about almost everything (even when they disagree, nothing revelatory seems to come from it). But they are so knowledgeable and well-listened that I can ignore that tendency. Great, great stuff if you fit the profile and especially if you’re looking to branch out in your listening.

An incredible podcast. Fascinating and rather brilliant discussions on topics that are frankly important. Hunter and Jeff more than know their stuff. An essential subscription for adventurous listeners.

Only twenty minutes into the first podcast and I know I’ll be listening to all these. The perfect content for obsessed fans of music that like background details and who want to expand their music consumption.

It isn't just Jeff and Hunter's comprehensive knowledge that makes this podcast special, it's that you can immediately tell how deeply they care about the music, too. Radical Research is equal parts erudition and "dude, you've got to check this out..."

First, Jeff Wagner and Hunter Ginn are professors of music, and incredibly knowledgeable. I found this podcast through the Requiem Metal Podcast (also highly recommended!!) and as a music lover, Jeff and Hunter have turned me on to a bunch of new, and under appreciated music. Thankfully, I was already a fan of avant-garde artists, like King Crimson and Ulver, but finding new artists like Manes and Beyond Dawn has been great. I also appreciate their love for 70’s prog, specifically Italian Prog, Kraut-Rock and the other sub-genres of prog rock. Can’t recommend this podcast enough, and while I don’t like every band/artist discussed, I have listened to every episode so far, and I appreciate Jeff and Hunter’s enthusiasm and passion!

Along with Jeremiah Cymerman’s 5049 Records Podcast, this is by far my favorite music podcast out there. Jeff and Hunter know their prog and metal beyond all the reasonable requirements. Often the range of reference and scope of analysis is downright nasty and humiliating, which is EXACTLY what we music nerds crave. These guys are dialed in!! Grab a pen, for this is a great place to find new music from the vaults (their taste IS reliable!), reevaluate your opinions on old polemical topics such as My Dying Bride’s 90s black swan, and make you feel silly for forgetting the greatness of Carbonized. Keep up the great work, guys!

As a fan many bands that will never receive the attention they deserve, listening to Jeff and Hunter discuss them in-depth is very exciting. Even if it's about a band I've never bothered to listen to, or even knew existed, they make the process of dicovery exciting.

Wo fo you not have episode about ROOT from Czechia yet, brah?

Two extremely knowledgeable, down-to-earth music lovers delving deep into some of the most undderated artists, eras and releases in metal, prog, punk, underground rock, etc. To me, a great podcast should feel extremely specific and personal, and the tight focus of these episodes -- an entire episode on Carbonized; pinch me! -- is exactly what I'm looking for. I loved Jeff's 'Mean Deviation' book and Peter Steele bio and these episodes are like a continuation of those essential, passion-driven projects. Cheers!

Jeff and Hunter’s depth of knowledge across so many genres (and sub-genres) is nothing short of inspiring. While not absolutely every single track or album is squarely within my listening wheelhouse, I most certainly learn something new EVERY single podcast. Furthermore, I believe I am better for having been exposed to the material these two aficionados enthusiastically, sometime amusingly (fried egg sandwich), and profoundly discuss. I anxiously await every episode. Fact. Stellar job, gentlemen!

Sometimes a challenge, but always an adventure. Listening to this podcast has greatly increased my knowledge of, and interest in, progressive music. Who knew there was an significant prog scene in Italy during the 1970's? Not me until Episode 9! Jeff and Hunter's breadth and depth of progressive rock music is staggering and something to be spread and heard by prog fan near and far.

A wonderful discussion, chit chat, conversation, etc etc about unique music and musicians. I’ve been searching for YEARS for something like this. Hope this lasts for YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS. If you’re a fan of music on the extreme side, this is for you. Not fills of burbs, farts dumb weekend recaps or just saying “I like to this riff”.. Sit down, dig in, listen, learn and enjoy.!!!!

A smart and engaging podcast from two guys I know and respect. The love of their subject is up front and the thoroughness of the discussion is impressive. Like so many old friends, Jeff and Hunter share an easy rapport, which is part of the fun in listening, but their knowledge of and passion for the bands they profile is the great attraction.

Jeff and Hunter are doing God's own work with this podcast. I've enjoyed every episode so far and hope that their descent (or ascent) into the weirdness of metal's outer realms continues!

Finally, a podcast for metalheads by metalheads. Wagner has been on my radar since the Metal Maniacs days and his wisdom does not disappoint. His co-host Hunter is very knowledgeable and insightful. Two devil horns up. Thanks fellas!

I'm a fan of Jeff Wagner's book Mean Deviation, which is undoubtedly the best (and admittedly only) history and analysis of Prog Metal. If your heart is set aflutter by the mere mention of names like Dan Swano, Voivod, or Magma, this is the podcast for you. The hosts do a bang-up job. Their insights are sharp and their knowledge exhaustive. Their opinions are well-considered but not dogmatic. They're not snarky or pretentious. Their banter is funny and smart. They're the type of genuine, enthusiastic music lifers I'd love to hang out with. Their increasing inclusion of audio clips is the all important icing on the cake. Since this podcast fills a very specific but hungry niche, I hope they stick with it and keep delving into all these obscure corners, from the metal covered in Jeff's book to the 70s prog touched on in Episode 3. An insatiable audience awaits.

Jeff and Hunter are two encyclopediae of all music challenging and overlooked. The conversation maintains archival-like accuracy but at no point feels academic; just two fellas talkin' and conversatin' on prog and avant-garde. I recommend having a pen and paper handy to later continue on your own down the proggy rabbit hole they've uncovered. Also learn about what constitutes a proper fried egg sandwhich. The truth will set you free.

This podcast is certainly not for everyone and that’s to its own as well as to its intended audiences’ benefit. This podcast is solely for those audiophilic spelunkers that are driven to vault over turnstiles and guardrails in favor of wildly schismatic and frankly chancy rabbit holes. I’ve pined for these particular discussions for years and I can hardly believe my luck to finally hear these topics bandied by bonafide, no foolin’ luminaries. I’m utterly thrilled. If you’re still reading this review, well, there’s a chance for you as well. Are you cool enough?

Jeff Wagner has been my favorite music journalist for years now. I’m so glad he and Hunter have this podcast.
