    Great Podcast
Great podcast. Wealth of knowledge in here. Thanks Patrick; your work has taught me a lot. I’ve definitely become a better DP from the framework and other principles of cinematography that you’ve brought to light.

    Thank you
I’ve ACed for years and honestly learned nothing about lighting because I was too busy pulling focus! 😂 Anyway thank you so much Patrick. You’ve taught me so much and not having gone to film or art school, my stuff looks incredible and it looks like I won’t have to pull focus for other people much longer 😘

    Great podcast
I have been listening to this podcast for years and still look forward to every episode. It has been so valuable to me to grow personally and professionally as a DP. I love the interviews. It is great to hear how everyone has a different approach and there is no right or wrong way to create your final image. I wish I had more time to really dig into the breakdown episodes, but just listening to the interview episodes in the car has been wonderful.

Great Host and discussions on the show
If you’re a cinematographer or a camera dept person, you’re probably already familiar with Wandering DPs YouTube breakdown videos but the podcast are arguably even more interesting since you also get to hear big name cinematographers give their take on the industry and working behind the camera at a high level. It’s refreshing, thanks Pat.

    Good teacher
I'll encourage you to listen if you want to learn a lot about cinematography. This podcast is for a seasoned pro and not the normal intro to filmmaking stuff here. It’s refreshing to graduate from 101 level cinematographer.

    Patrick’s podcast is priceless
I’ve learned so much from Patrick. He is candid about his knowledge and is a great personality on the mic. You’ll also find that there’s a great community of people who listen to the Wandering DP, especially if you’re a supporter on Patreon. I’d recommend this podcast to anyone in the industry, especially cinematographers and directors. The breakdowns and guest conversations are incredibly insightful, and his honesty is priceless.

    Love Wandering DP
I’m constantly learning and growing from the episodes. Listening to the guests on the show makes me inspired and more confident. They are international and come from different backgrounds which is great. I appreciate the breakdowns and the different topics covered on cinematography.

    Step Your Game Up
There are a LOT of podcasts out there, the vast majority of them are trash. This one is not. Patrick breaks down—with brutal honesty & wit—every step of the filmmaking process. Deep dives into commercial and narrative production, lighting, blocking and script breakdowns, and interviews with the people making the films you aspire to make, this breadth of knowledge would take years to gather on your own. Stop reading this review and start listening.

    Fantastic industry insights and education
Whether you’re a beginning filmmaker or a seasoned pro, there’s valuable information in every episode. Patrick breaks down what it’s like being a working DP while deconstructing his own work and the work of other DP’s and directors. He interviews top working pro’s and gets to the nitty gritty of making moving images and storytelling. As each episode ends, I immediately want more.

    Consistently Great for emerging DP’s
Patrick is a Commercial Cinematographer that breaks down his own projects, talks about complications, and gear used. If you are new at being a DP or even a Director, the knowledge passed though his lips are so sweet that you’ll hide them in your thank bank.

    Subjects are great
well done, love how you really get into the tech, but also the feelings behind the artist you interview. Well researched. Glad the intro music is getting better.

    The Best Cinematography Podcast
I’ve been on a cinematography podcast binge over the past year and have listened through all the major ones from beginning to end. Wandering DP is by far the most comprehensive and best mix of tech, artistry, and industry knowledge. I’ve noticed improvements in my work since studying his breakdowns and the interviews are really inspirational. The host, Patrick, has an odd, but charming sense of humor and just the right personal touch. Note: The breakdown episodes really do need to be listened to while referencing the stills in the show notes.

    First Time Listener
I am new to film and videography. I have been looking for a podcast to introduce me to the fundamentals and important concepts. I like this one the best so far...the host is awesome, great guests and I love learning the techniques. If you’re serious about learning this one definitely is worth the time getting into!

Patrick helps me speak the language
My DP turned me onto this show so I could learn to not be such a terrible producer for our fledgling little start up, Ideal Impact Media. Patrick and his guests are an amazing resource and have taught me incredible things that I would imagine would only be attained through expensive schooling or thousands of hours on set. Thank you!
  • Sweetfeet78
    Into Darkness
Patrick breaks down his work and the work of others to the point where it’s simple to recreate some of the looks and understand what effects the tools and techniques have. It’s changed my work, and now my clients are always telling me my images are too dark. Thanks, Patrick!

    One hell of a podcast!
I have listened to nearly all these podcasts and they have been my companion on many a journey to set and back. I find this to be one of the most helpful and interesting sources of cinematography information on the internet and put it up there with ASC, Roger Deakins, Shane Hurlbut, David Mullen, Matt Workman in terms of internet sources of helpful cinematographic information. I highly recommend this podcast to all up-and-coming cinematographers and even to established ones, if not to learn something, then just to hear Patrick “flapping his gums” can be quite entertaining.
  • Bluenote79
    Extremely valuable education for DPs
Basically, aside from going out and actually doing the work, this podcast gives a budding DP a great chance to see inside the mind of a commercial cinematographer. He also addresses more in depth cinematography issues that are way beyond me. Highly valuable information here. I love the lighting breakdowns. I love the down to earth communication. Keep em coming Patrick!

    Patrick is a professional dude.
I shoot with a 60D and have never been on a film set. So I don't know what I'm talking about. BUT, I have learned a lot just from listening to this podcast on my way to work! Patrick makes information about the industry accessible. He's a professional but talks like one of the dudes. He's become a familiar voice and I'll keep listening as long as he keeps making fun of himself.
  • DanDJ Lab
I listen to this every moment I get
Finding an honest, consistent and straight forward resource for lighting is incredibly difficult. A lot of other sources don't go into the detai that Patrick does. I've already grown so much as a DP thanks to him!
  • Cullen$y
    Top Notch
I have listend to every podcast thus far and I look forward to every wednesday when a new episode drops! The conversations between other DP's/Directors and the breakdowns have been very helpful tool/resource for me to scale into a commercial market from a majority corporate in house market. Must listen for DP's at all levels. Cheers

    Incredible Resource
Long time listener since early on - While several industry podcasts can be creatively inspiring and give career insight, this one is the pretty much the only one that generally gives stylistically-relevant PRACTICAL knowledge on how to light and control the image today. Better lighting lessons than a top-tier 1 film school, by far...and interviews with the best working commercial DPs around.
  • Seth Epstein
    Better than College
If you are a director, cinematographer, or aspiring to be one - this is a MUST. It's not academic yet I have learned more about light and filming than I have from being in the industry for over 20 years. Kudos to Patrick for the tone, humor and the guests.

    Invaluable
Patrick does such a great job, letting you enjoy the show but also really giving incredible insight and knowledge for all aspects of production. I’m a cinematographer and his lighting techniques are dreamy, his explanations are thorough and with good reasoning. Every aspiring film-maker or professional should listen to this podcast. Keep it up Pat!

    A must for DPs
I have learned more this podcast and I have in years looking up stuff online. It’s like concentrated cinematography goodness. Interviews are great and I really enjoy the commercial breakdowns. If you enjoy making great images and you’re not listening to this podcast...you’re wrong. (Subjectively)

    Invaluable
Such an incredible resource. The amount of information that Patrick as well as the other directors and DPs that he features is invaluable. Every cinematographer and director should be subscribed as there is an abundance of knowledge to be gained from listening to him.

    Entertaining, Invaluable, and Comprehensive.
This is a must if you are in the industry. Great breakdowns, tech tips, and a great dose of someone actually being authentic and real. I've scoured the dark corners of the internet for this type of education and resource, so look no further.
  • Willie555
    Keep up the great work

    One of the best.
This podcast is a gold mine of great info for cinematographers and filmmakers.

LOVE this - Aspiring DPs this is for you!
I've only recently discovered this posdcast a week or two ago. I just wish I'd found it sooner! I'm devouring these episodes like there's no tomorrow. Such a great podcast in my opinion - because the opportunity to actually get to watch and learn from DP's in real-world environments are so rare, listening to their insights is the next best thing for me, compared to actually being on set. I'm craving so badly to learn from those above me, this episodic content gets to scratch that itch. I especially like the technical information. I'm a total gear head, so listenening in about camera settings, specs, lenses, etc., is just the icing on the cake. Some of the guest speakers' points end up being very affirming and rewarding when it relates to some of my processes, like how I use my waveform and certain IRE values to expose my shot. When I learned that another DP does it the same way, it's like - "OK - I'm headed down the right path." It's extremely rare to get that kind of pro "feedback" in the real world, so learning that way is the next best thing. Please keep doing what you're doing Pat!

TLDR: This is the best single resource for aspiring Cinematographers. I’ll scour the internet for hours to find a single nugget of meaningful information, and here on The Wandering DP Podcast, Patrick passes them out constantly. I started listening to this podcast around episode 50, and was a bit confused with the breakdown format. I was in the car, and he was referring to images on his site, and honestly, it didn’t hold my attention. I was a bit lost, and it was totally my own fault. I found my way to his website a short while later, and I haven’t been the same since. I really appreciate the way he breaks down images into all of the different layers, and makes the technical aspect of cinematography approachable. The balance of HOW and WHY, in my opinion, is the constant struggle for a cinematographer of any level. In the beginning, when you don’t know how to do anything, the how is all that you focus on, and it can be difficult to step back and look at the why. I feel like Patrick balances the why and the how better than anyone I’ve come across. I’m very grateful for the amazing resource Patrick is providing to the community, and the sacrifices he’s made. I hope that this podcast continues to grow, and inspires others the way that it has inspired me.

    A Great Podcast
This is seriously the best podcast I've ever listened to. I look forward to drinking my coffee and listening to how to light scenes and the problem solving entailed throughout. Once I'm done I'm always eager to do something similar thinking, "oh yeah it's easy," until I actually try it and find myself seeing how hard it really is again and again. There's always so much to learn in every podcast and I highly reccomend it.
