A fan of Mike since the first episodes of Rome and have all his books in hardcover but this is just an unorganized mess. Feels like we are uncomfortably overhearing a conversation where the participants don’t care if we understand.

I’m a long time Mike Duncan fan and am looking forward to the return of a fact-based Revolutions podcast. The historical vignettes presented here are entertaining and enlightening but the vehicle in which they are enclosed is so self-congratulatory, narcissistic, and politically slanted that I feel like I need to don a HazMat suit prior to listening! We care about the history, not your personal lives and biases so please reboot as a History Show and not an MSNBC clone.

Boring, slow paced, pompous, self-indulgent, and lacking in depth. Do not waste your time. I’ve been a Mike Duncan listener for a long time, and I wanted so bad to enjoy this show, I have attempted to listen to most episodes and I haven’t made it through a single one. Neither of these two offer any real in-depth analysis or have any interesting or thoughtful discussion on their topics. You can tell these two are just in love with the fact they’re having a conversation, and gracing us by allowing us to listen to them. Frankly I’m shocked anyone would give this 5 stars. Literally any other history podcast is better than this. If you were a Mike Duncan fan too, this show is not for you. Mike is not an interesting guy. Excellent at written narrative and storytelling, but boring, self indulgent, and pompous in every other aspect of his life. Alexis Coe too is insufferable. She rivals Mike’s arrogance and acts like she’s the first female historian and some kind of brave trailblazer. Alexis wrote a biography on George Washington, which is one in THOUSANDS of others and adds nothing to the historiography. Alexis, You’re not first, you’re not pushing boundaries, and you’re not anywhere near as important as you attempt to inflate yourself to be. So if you want high-minded arrogant and narcissistic buddy talk between two “friends” (because they definitely cheated on their spouses with each other) this is the podcast for you! If you’re looking for actual interesting history-based conversations, you should look elsewhere. Seriously there are hundreds of wonderful history podcasts out there. As of writing this, they have finished their first season and hopefully they call it quits after this.

Love the perspective Mike Duncan offers. It’s also nice to listen to a podcast by him more casually than I typically do in his other podcast which i love as well

I think a more casual podcast about more obscure modernish history is a pretty cool idea. Not all the topics have been hits, but many were. This has 4-5 star potential, but I’d probably give it 2 stars based solely on the product so far. A couple things for you two to consider other than you all needing a consistent upload schedule. I think this format works MUCH better if you do it in seasons where each season has an overarching theme. Would really help relay to people why they should care about these obscure but very interesting topics. Also, I do think the 5-4 Podcast benefits a lot from them having defined roles in the discussion of each case; someone does the majority opinion, someone does the main dissent, etc. They still have a VERY casual tone, but the conversation ends up pretty well structured. I think if Mike and Alexis kind of each had a separate “lane” in the discussions the podcast would be better.

Feels like one of is with friends knocking about history vignettes.

I want to like this so much more. Mike has great facts and is great at giving information in a conversational way, but Alexis seems intent on constantly interrupting the narrative or delivering information at a ridiculously/frustratingly slow pace so as to interrupt every single episode. It’s like when you try to tell a story to your boomer parent and they have questions or interrupt you in the middle of every sentence to the point where you just want to say “and they all died THE END”

It’s the first season just setting up who the hosts are and what they do. Both seem to bring something different and unique to the table. So far love what they have to say and can’t wait for the actual show.

Loved Revolutions and the Audio version of Hero of Two Worlds. I don’t enjoy the flow of this podcast as much. Feels clunky and not as engaging.

As a huge fan of History of Rome and Revolutions, I was excited for a new Mike Duncan show. That being said this isn't clicking for me. I have struggled to even make it through the first few episodes.

I’ve been a fan since the first ten episodes of The History of Rome. I still love you, Mike, but this more conversational format with your friend isn’t doing it for me.

I was really hoping for something interesting, since I’ve enjoyed everything Duncan has done. Unfortunately there is zero podcast chemistry with Coe. On top of that, the topics discussed have been snoozers for me.

What a lovely and enjoyable show that happens to at least somewhat discuss history! This podcast is largely just two amazing historians BSing with each other and I’m here for it. It’s lighthearted fun!

Probably the worst podcast I’ve ever heard. It’s disheartening that a talented podcaster like Mike somehow thought this was a good idea. I’m embarrassed for him and can only imagine something else is going on in his life that is clouding his judgment right now. The other host has yet to say anything interesting. Hope they cancel this show and preserve some dignity.

Enjoying a glimpse inside the heads of two of my favorite popular historians!

The podcast about Lindbergh was really great especially in conjunction with the history of that time. With the Gladiator II podcast, it takes away from your credibility when you say that Ridley Scott was just skimming a book for background unless you know that sure. Everything you say in the podcast becomes questionable when you make stuff up.

History is so many things but at its absolute best it is a storyteller relaying fascinating true events to an audience that knows how to ask the right questions. Duncan and Coe have great rapport, depths of knowledge, and especially the uncanny ability to pair esoteric facts with compelling storytelling. An absolute delight.

I’m a fan of both Alexis Coe and Mike Duncan individually—and I think what they’re doing here together is really special and greater than the sum of its parts. We should all aspire to love history the way Alexis and Mike do!

Really fun episodes from two great historians

Duncan & Coe is great because it’s not a scripted, planned out narrative. The hosts bounce topics back and forth and take tangents through their respective areas of expertise. Episodes are also not too long so you get a bunch of delicious history morsels in an easy to digest format.

Two great hosts with great chemistry doing great things with great topics. You like history? You’ll like this show. You don’t like history? Too bad, you’re living it.

Don’t listen to the haters. This is a good podcast. I’ve enjoyed stuff from both of these authors and am looking forward to what this podcast is becoming. The most recent episode about Lindbergh is great and what the people want.

Love that these two experts let us in behind the scenes a bit—they are each so knowledgeable, and it’s fun to be in on the conversation, like eavesdropping at a very smart party. This show makes history more accessible and personal, as the hosts hold their wealth of knowledge lightly enough to share it with a bit of a wink.

I’ve missed listening to your take on history. And the addition of Alexis Coe is great. Love the interactions between you both. Looking forward to more and more

I loved both History of Rome and Revolutions, but this just isnt doing it for me.

I enjoy the back and forth between these two stalwart defenders of the practical utility of historical understanding. I look forward to more!

Two compelling, thoughtful people on a podcast in search of a theme. But is this show greater than the sum of its parts? What is our reason for being here? Given your success, I think we’ll get there. But guys — and I say this with love — get a room! 😉

If you are looking for a history show like The History of Rome or Revolutions, then The Duncan & Coe History Show is not for you. If you are looking for a podcast about current events, politics, movies, and other things loosely associated with history, then you might like The Duncan & Coe History Show. I did not expect The History of Rome or Revolutions given the podcast’s title, but I thought it would be about history. It is very loosely about history at best. Also, Mike, I assume you do not want anyone to discuss your personal life. However, you open that door when you start a podcast with the woman you broke up your marriage and family for. Stop flirting with her and come up with a format and purpose for a history show and act like colleagues not lovers who ended two marriages.

Writing this early on, so there have only been a few episodes, but Mike and Alexis need to figure out what their goal is. I’m writing this as a listener to Revolutions and not someone who knows Alexis’s previous work, so this show may very well work for her audience, but the loose format leaves too much space for Mike and Alexis to flirt. If that’s your thing, that’s fine, but I doubt it’s something either of the hosts actually intended to be so obvious. I also don’t have a problem with “guys [gender inclusive] talking” podcasts. I think 5-4, KYE, You’re Wrong About, etc. all work because they have a particular theme, though. As it is, I just don’t know how I would explain this show to someone.

Stick to written narrative, not current events. The co-host is intolerable

I’ve never listened before. You follow in the footsteps of those democrats who focussed on how to hold the republicans responsible for their egregious crimes. There are ways in which one could have doubled down and intelligently, creatively and forcefully held republicans responsible. Inc the former president. You two, like the rest of folks were not talented enough to be able to do that. I will not listen again- and I’m an obsessive nyc, artist podcast listener.

I have loved your stuff for years. But you two either need to get a room or stop flirting during the episodes. It’s a bit much

I enjoy it, if you were only fans of Mikes old podcasts its not that, and they let you know it right up front. If you liked Mikes twitter or Alexis’s public facing work, its good. I think it needs to find its footing a bit more but gave it 5 anyway to offset idiots leaving 1 star that can’t understand its an entirely different podcast / cringe at a woman speaking.

The hosts clearly find their banter to be witty and charming and delightful, and expect the audience to feel the same way. Maybe things will improve, but thus far it’s just not working. Good history podcasts require engaging storytelling, a skill Duncan obviously has. But this show unfortunately just feels like two people giving their opinion on current and recent political events, and so far there’s no clear reason why we the audience should listen or care.

Lots of words that are utterly meaningless. It’s like listening to a Kamala Harris speech. Talk history not your political book.

I know it’s early but I’m not sure what this pod is supposed to be. Mike sounds like a school boy around Alexa which is not becoming. The flow seems forced, content lacking and the length wanting. While I’m no fan of President Trump, the scathing way they refer to him makes them seem so out of touch like a couple of ivory tower sophisticates airing their distain of the commoners. I’m not familiar with Alexa but have been a huge fan of Mike. For this show to work they need to put their romantic energy aside and actually talk history. I want to like this but so far, not impressed. Stay out of politics guys! It’s not why we are here.

I've been a fan of Duncan's previous work so I listened in to this podcast even though I was dubious about the format and premise. Unfortunately it's just boring, it's just them talking about random stuff going on in their lives. And listening to Coe is like falling in a time wormhole and returning to summer of 2020. Insufferable sanctimony.

Sadly, Mike Duncan has gone the way of the sanctimonious Roman Consul. He believes in his artificial hubris. So sad to see. Still, Histiry of Rome is one of the best. How the mighty has fallen.

I wanted to like this but they have not found their footing. I am not sure which part of the Revolutions fandom made Mike think we would be up for “banter”

Excited for the substantive episodes to start

Self important, self referential.

Hopefully it will find its footing. But I have been struggling to click with the energy and pacing. Also the discussion of “black-tie events” and speaking tours was a little off-putting.

New Mike Duncan is always exciting. So happy to have him back in not one but two podcasts. Can’t wait to see what Alexis Coe’s takes are as well. I can only imagine that these conversations will be insightful and interesting.

Haven’t even gotten a full minute into the first episode, but I am quite confident that this will be awesome!

Thrilled to listen to the new show, eager to get more of Mike Casual and get familiar with Alexis! Also of course excited for the new Revolutions fiction series as well. Pay no mind to the truly deranged and catty reviewers who are far far too invested in the personal lives of people they’ve never even met, Duncan and Coe seem like a wonderful pair of hosts.

Life changing, those are the only words to describe this.
