After Dark is a charming and engaging podcast that not only informs but entertains. If you are a person who enjoys and appreciates dark academia without wishing to be bogged down with the nonsense of those who take themselves too seriously, After Dark strikes a perfect balance. The hosts have a lovely rapport that appeals to both the cynic and the romantic. The guests thus far have been neither dull nor arrogant and the subject matter is diverse enough that it is highly unlikely anyone could accuse the show of being routine or monotonous in anyway. What’s more, the podcast is presented as such that one can skip episodes and focus on only those of personal interest if one should so choose. I have proudly listened since day one and anticipate listening to After Dark for a long time to come. Thank you for creating a wonderful way for me to be entertained and educated.

I found this podcast by chance, and after giving a listen to a few episodes, I’m hooked. The production is flawless, the hosts are pleasant and knowledgeable, despite the subject matter being at times gruesome, the choice of musical score is well selected, the sound over all is totally professional, and it’s all together fascinating, geared for those of us who crave well researched and well presented historic content. As one who produces true crime history podcasts, I’m very impressed. Bravo.

The hosts are brilliant but also have very pleasant voices that are nice to listen to. The audio quality is excellent except for the occasional guest with their own setup. The topics are always SO good, and the guests are always so impressive. It’s such a treat to listen to scholars who love what they do share their work excitedly.

Just discovered this and it sounded interesting. Started with the first episode. A few minutes in after a preview explaining that the episode was about 3 women murdered in Victorian London the female presenter found something funny. Laughter ensued, giggling and somehow the murder became funny. Sorry, not my idea of humor. The idea of one of them being nearly decapitated was apparently funny to the host. Not to me. Seriously suggest you stay away from this one.

This is a terrific podcast with hosts who have a great chemistry and, aside from their expertise, are terrific storytellers. For me, the stories help me to place the action - THANK YOU! And I love that you put the topic in context of what’s happening in the world at the same time. Thank you all for such an informative AND entertaining show.

The stories are captivating but the best thing about this podcast are the hosts. I enjoy their easy repartee and their voices are PERFECT for listening to.

After being a day 1 listener, I feel this is the podcast if Trixie & Katya were to present the mysteries and the macabre of the past. Maddy and Anthony are like two friends on a phone call or out at brunch discussing topics. There’s always a joke or a sassy sidebar on each episode. Thought they may discuss serious topics at times, they never make it feel like a lecture. Another great history hit podcast

Super interesting, creative storytelling, and well researched. Sometimes Dr. Maddy can be a little moralistic. She’s always right, but it can feel performative.

I love how history is presented. Though dealing with grim topics, the hosts don’t forget they are talking about real people who suffered. They bring humor to the show when appropriate. Overall, it’s a well thought out show hosted my historians who can be both informative and entertaining. They address the darker side of history without being ghoulish , instead presenting human stories.

I listen to a lot of history podcasts and have always looked for ones focused on the macabre but they tend to be too hokey or the hosts take things way too seriously. This podcast is neither and is the perfect mix of interesting historical facts and fun banter. The hosts have really great chemistry and the guests are always solid too. Also love how they tend to keep episodes around 40 minutes.

I just listened to my first episode and was pleasantly surprised. This is real history with real historians! As informative and interesting as everything else from History Hit! I will be diving deeper into the back catalogue.

I stumbled on this podcast earlier this week and have been listening non-stop. Such a great find that blends history, facts, humor, and great guests for a truly entertaining experience.

I will echo what many others have said: the topics are intriguing and well-researched. Would give it 5 stars weren’t not for the smugness of the hosts and their very 21st-century, often self-absorbed lens (complete with self-identifiers such as “recovering Catholics”). It might surprise them to learn that they have a broad audience with a variety of perspectives, and thus they would do well not to make assumptions. Perhaps they can extend their purported open-mindedness to all listeners.

I really want to give this podcast five stars because the topics are fascinating and the hosts are well informed, but I have to give demerits for the fact that one of the hosts talks about herself and her own life way too much.

I absolutely love this podcast. They are perfect hosts and I learn so much. I could listen all day long. I never miss a show and I often listen multiple times while walking. It’s a perfect podcast.

I love the topics and History Hit is wonderful. However Maddie and Antony (the hosts) bring their ego to each episode. “I did this” or “I’m working that”, is sprinkled throughout many episodes and it’s a bit cringey. Overall, they’re not very objective storytellers and try to connect/insert themselves into every episode. A good comparison is Suzanna Lipscomb in Not Just the Tutors. She’s brilliant at telling the story without making it about her. Advice for Maddie and Antony, we know you’re smart and successful, so let your work talk for itself.

This is my absolute favorite podcast! Every episode leaves me feeling like I’ve gotten an intimate peek into the lives of historical figures. As a scientist, I appreciate the rigorous research that goes into the stories, but what sets this show apart are the wonderful hosts and their gifts for storytelling and thoughtful analysis. Pick any episode and give it a listen-you’ll be hooked!

I can’t get enough of this podcast…I could listen for hours. Every episode is incredibly entertaining, informative and SO interesting! That’s not unnecessary filler chat that’s only between the hosts and I love that. They get right into the episodes, which are incredible!

So entertaining and informative! I feel like I’ve been to my favorite history class in college, where I loved the prof and the work (and I wasn’t a history major!) This podcast engages my love of true and history. A true find!

This podcast is interesting and entertaining. The hosts are great, and I love their accents. I have binged many episodes since I discovered it last month.

This podcast makes a tantalizing cross between True Crime, the Paranormal, and Historical Events. The intersection of those things makes for a brilliant series that I absolutely love listening to, and the chemistry and humor between the hosts absolutely enhanced an already amazing podcast. This is a must-listen for any person who likes even one of the above categories!

I just listened to part of the ghosts of the south episode. The guest was so annoying to me as a southerner, born and bred, that I had to turn it off. The information sounded about right, but the delivery was just God awful. And the hyperbolic sense of righteous anger took the steam out of what she was trying to say. Too bad, because our part of the country has a rich dark history then I would love to see explored further.

Typically a great podcast but this episode was hard to listen to with the guest insinuating that tourists are responsible for propagating the history of misogyny and racism in America. The hosts have always done a decent job disguising their liberal views but this episode removed any doubt. This particular guest was easily the worst I’ve heard in listening to multiple episodes of this podcast.

This is such a wonderful podcast. The stories told are all very interesting. Great production quality and the hosts are awesome.

This podcast is so good that I’m writing a review, which I never do! It is well-done, interesting, and much more educated than the majority of crime podcasts that are out there. If you like true crime but worry you’re rotting your brain by listening to your typical podcasts, give this one a listen.

My friend sent me a link for the Jack the Ripper podcast of who isn’t Jack the Ripper and I must say I was impressed with how it was handled and discussed. Love the new perspective. I will definitely continue listening.

I regularly listen to several of the History Hit podcasts, but this topic never appealed to me. After listening to a couple episodes, though, I found myself absolutely addicted! Both of the hosts are fantastic and the scripted sections are captivating.

Anthony and Maddie have a great chemistry, and make all the stories so much fun to listen to!

Great episode - a little correction for the record. Prince Albert Victor was born at Frogmore House, not Frogmore Cottage (the former home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex). While both are at Windsor, Frogmore House is considerably larger than the Cottage (as their names imply).

I found this podcast a few weeks ago and have been binge listening to it whenever I can. I love the description of images and how they set the scene to a story. The episode about Joseph Merrick made me tear up. It was such a beautiful tribute to him.
