When You're Invisible

108

This is my love letter to the working class people and immigrants who shaped me. Too often we focus on stories about people who have achieved positions of influence, wealth, and power. On this podcast, we won’t be doing that. Many of our guests have never been interviewed before. I want to shed light on the experiences of folks who feel invisible. What do everyday people have to say about their lives, their country, their hopes and dreams, and what they believe would make the world a better place?

I’m your host, Maria Fernenda Diez and I’m a first gen Mexican-American. Growing up, my family moved to different regions of the US - from the East Coast to the Midwest to the South - and we were on food stamps when I was young before we became middle class. I ended up getting an almost full ride to the Ivy League but never left my roots behind. I call myself an in-betweener because I’m part of many communities, but don’t fully fit into one single community. Although this can be lonely at times, it’s a vulnerability that can help me connect with others, have honest conversations, and build genuine connections.

    When you’re invisible
This made me cry. I too am an immigrant and so I can relate to this on so many levels. The thing that made me cry was when her mother (who was a stay at home mother) said that she also felt invisible to her family. I too was a stay at home mother and after many years I really did feel like I was “just” the wife, “just” my kids’ mom, meanwhile my husband was out there climbing his career ladder. Yes, I can relate. It brought tears to my eyes.

Exactly what i was looking for
So many popular podcast are white and showcase folks from better socioeconomic status than i am which i don’t identify with and are lacking authenticity because they are a brand. I very much appreciate this perspective and work.

    Favorite New Podcast
I absolutely love the perspective. Much needed for people like me who think we’re “different” because our live’s trajectory is not the same as others around us. We’re out here, and this podcast proves it.

    Much needed podcast!
The stories of those who are not the most visible, listened to, or respected in our society — the essential workers who make everything run smoothly — deserve to be told. Thank you for creating a platform to amplify their voices!

    So glad I found this
I found you from TDZ and I am so happy I did! I’m half Mexican and half white, my mom is an office worker at a small university and my dad is a retired landscaper. Hearing someone telling the stories of people like them, the people who are invisible, who are ignored, who are walked over, but are so much more and so fundamental to who I am. Thank you for providing a voice to the unseen and underappreciated! I can’t wait to hear the next episodes.

    Engaging, thoughtful poscast
I am not a huge podcast listener but this one kept me engaged throughout. Maria is the type of narrator that lets the listener in on personal thoughts while still informing on the topic. It’s a very interesting, needed exploration of those not often heard from in our society and I can’t wait to listen to more!

Excited for the first episode to drop!
This concept is critical in a time of high polarization. Truly a “love letter to the working class” in all its forms and the people who make our society run.

Listen and Learn to Broaden your Perspective
We are living in a critical time where our country’s and our planet’s issues are knocking on the door and asking for solutions. Issues that were caused, directly or indirectly, by what our society decided to value, and decided not to value. I’m looking forward to this podcast because it offers a voice to those individuals who were previously ignored. With these stories, we can broaden our perspective and change our society for the better. I’m excited to listen and learn from those whose voices are finally being amplified!
