Ghostlore of Hawaii: Paranormal Paradise

221

When most people think of Hawaii, they imagine sand, surf, and the Aloha Spirit....but spirits of a different kind may occupy the Hawaiian islands. Most people visiting the islands don‘t know of Hawaii‘s haunted history. Want to learn of the haunted hotels and the restless spirits that still roam the grounds? Or why whistling at night attracts spirits of the dead... Come join me, Uncle Jared, as I cover these infamous tales on my podcast, Ghostlore of Hawaii: Paranormal Paradise

    So good
Just listened to part 1 of the woman and the horse and I cried. I love the humor of the tellings of the stories, the funny background commentaries but this surprised me with how poignantly he told the story. I really liked it. I hope he will post more. I don’t hear a lot of Hawaiian ghost stories but the ones I’ve heard are different from the lore.

    Great!
I went to Maui in early 2020, doing mostly tourist things that left me hankering for more cultural oriented things. I love folklore and this podcasts dives into modern Hawai’i’s legends, some are recent and some are ancient. The host does them as a modern story, sometimes trying for the a fictionalized version to protect the people involved. Its great. I wish he could put out episodes more often.

    Staying connected to Hawaii
Aloha! I just got back from an incredible two week honeymoon on Oahu and the Big Island and fell in love with the land and cultures. I wanted to learn more and with Halloween coming up I figured spooky podcast was in order. This pod combines it all and I am greatly enjoying every episode from the beginning! Thank you for teaching me and making me feel connected to the islands even from South Carolina 13 hours away! Mahalo!

    I love this podcast!
Before this podcast, I didn’t THINK I was into ghosts and paranormal activity. Jared’s podcast is engaging, informative and adds bits of comedic relief. My husband and I are planning stops centered around places mentioned in the podcast. I can’t wait for season 3.

If you love Hawai’i, listen to this!
Content is a perfect blend of history, culture, tradition, lore, and spooky. Voice is as soothing as if I’m at a Kam Song Contest. So exciting to have Hawai’i’s voice in the mix! Would be cool to have references in the show notes for those (me!) that would like to do further reading. Keep it up, Braddah!

Great show - even for a couple of haoles!
You will love grabbing a green bottle and hanging out with this podcast around the campfire- whether or not it’s on a warm beach or a chilly backyard in, say, Baltimore. The host has a friendly, casual style but never falls into the “overly-chatty/time-wasting podcaster” pitfall. The huz and I got hooked on this podcast while we were bombing around big island; this was the perfect companion for our adventures. The stories are entertaining as well as infused with Hawaiian history and cultural information. Native speakers of Hawaiian (and pidgin) may have to be a little patient, as the host is kind enough to quickly define words and phrases for us English-only types. —Incidentally, for anyone reading this who is planning a visit to the islands, listening to this and other podcasts by kanaka maoli (native hawaiian folks!) is a great way to become a more sensitive and responsible (and hopefully less annoying?) guest in someone else’s home[land].

I love this podcast! One of my favorite ways to learn about other cultures is through their folklore and ghost stories, and Uncle Jared totally delivers! He’s an awesome writer, storyteller, and sound editor. These stories are guaranteed to give you chicken skin!

    Ghost Lore
This is an awesome podcast. You get a little bit of everything. History of Hawaii, a local view, work, recreation, hangout spots. Spots to avoid for sure. There are highs and lows, action, drama, romance, tragedy. The narrator does a good job of describing the story, sound effects are on point. All and all a great podcast to listen to while you’re doing your thing.

    The BEST
As a working mom, this podcast is my favorite outlet - I listen to it while cooking and doing laundry, and on long drives. Enthralling stories set on the backdrop of Hawaii with crisp narration and the funniest background heckler ever 🤪.

    Super HOOKED!!
Let me start by saying I don’t / can’t do ghost stories, no can handle. That said , this is a complete turnaround for me !! I adore this narration , story line , background music , background comments (hysterical ) authentic history , beautiful Hawaiian pronunciation. Whew. It made me forget I don’t like ghost stories. I’m totally sold and you will be too. Don’t worry tho it is scary, its very well done.

    Finally
Always read Glen Grant stories and listen to Lopaka as a guest on several shows but always wanting more….So happy someone can share and talk story and keep it consistent!. Keep it up, love how you incorporate the Hawaiian vocabulary 👍🏼 and the effects.

    Top 5!
One of my fave podcasts. Jared is hilarious and under-stated, very calming and brings you into the story. While I love all the spooky stories, they aren’t told in a “horror genre” way, which makes them feel even more believable. Listeners also learn Hawai’ian vocabulary, culture, natural history, and even some politics. So rad and always puts me in a good mood. Ty Jared!

I love the commentary the narrator uses in his storytelling and the creative way he translates Hawaiian terms for the audience! Plus the content is so intriguing.

    Awesome!!!
This podcast is great in so many ways…the storylines, the voice overs, the use of o’lelo (hoping that’s the correct word), the humor, the seriousness lol (actually thought some were real tales), the hidden tips!! Not many podcasts have inspired me to research , buy books (Obakes of Hawaii) lol and learn some Hawaiian words. Mahalo!!

    Great podcast, highly recommend💙
I am not one that listens to podcast ever, but I happened upon this one and I am hooked! I binged listened to this while I’m building clients websites. Uncle Jared (kinda odd since he’s younger than me, lol) is a great story teller and love the special effects he adds. I’ll be a regular listener now. Thank you!
  • BonnieCraig
    FANTASTIC Show.
Uncle Jared is such a great storyteller. His kind, sweet voice, along with his humor and charming, self-deprecating asides, contrast in the best possible way with these chilling tales. Add in all of the rich and beautiful Hawaiian culture he so generously shares, and you have a truly delicious dish of a show.
  • DavidsLass
    Chicken skin at its best
Unko Jared really knows how to tell a spooky tale! His stories are addictive and really relate the particular, unmistakable, chilling feeling of experiencing the paranormal in Hawaii. His stories include his great sense of humor, as well as information about ʻōlelo Hawaii - many words in Hawaiian which are used by Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians alike in the islands. By far the best podcast around!

    Bubble Shout Outs
ETA Thank you for setting the scene with the fire and goodies- rad way to start your stories. Love this podcast. Great voice. I think you should be more confident in the acting part bc you’re doing amazing! My favorite parts are the little “bubble” shout out pieces of info you do- great timing! Keep going!!!

    Obsessed
After listening to Radio Rental (another podcast) about a Nightwalker on the Big Island and from being a frequent Maui visitor (show off), I became intrigued by ancient Hawaiian culture (and ghost stories). I stumbled upon this podcast and I love it (she thinks it’s awesome).
