Take One Daf Yomi

487
Judaism #10

As Jews around the world engage in a seven-and-a-half year cycle of Daf Yomi, reading the entire Talmud one page per day, Tablet Magazine's new podcast, Take One, will offer a brief and evocative daily read of the daf, in just about 10 minutes. New episodes will be released daily Monday through Friday.

    Talmud for Beginners
Great intro to Talmud for folks without a lot of background in how to break down the complex text. I love the insights - esp. from R. So if Boshevkin. While Tablet has really started to drift to some uncomfortable rightwing places, this pod is still a great place of enjoyment.

    Grandfather loves this!
It is so nice to hear a real person discuss Judaism in the modern world for lay people. I have forward episodes to my five children. And hope that they will pick up the thread. Bless you for your work.

Religion is always political, but this is just haranguing
I used to be a fan. I even bought the book. But the interpretations are now so politically predictable that I can guess the talking points in advance.

    Love this so much.

I have a very short commute. Most mornings Liel Take one get me there. It’s a perfect way to start the day with a little bit of Talmud… which I often then go read the whole page myself.

    Sigh
It was really enjoyable until he started trying to justify Israel’s land grabbing and genocide.

    Wonderful
Liel is a great host and teacher

    Using Talmud as a soapbox
Episode I listened to was basically hosts talking about themselves and then quickly quoting the Talmud and bending it severely and using it to talk about a random topic (episode about “not knowing”). The hosts seem to “not know” but they teach anyways…

A refreshing breath of Talmud in the morning
Really enjoy these succinct Daf discussions! Agree more of Hudson lol

A super twisted interpretation of the Talmud. Very heretical. מצד הקליפה

    More Hudson!
I listen every day, but today’s input from 10-year-old Hudson made me especially joyous. The simplicity of a child’s perspective during these complex and worrisome times was comforting. Thanks Hudson.

    Informative and entertaining
I have been listening to this podcast daily for more than three years. It’s always informative and entertaining! I do try to supplement it with the 5 Minute Daf Yomi podcast on Podbean, as Liel only covers one or two sentences of the daily daf.

    A little Talmud a day…
Just came across this podcast and have found it to be amazing. I love how the hosts connect the Talmud to some of the issues we face in a modern world. I’ve been listening to two episodes every day and really enjoy having my day made a little Talmudic

    So enjoyable
Usually awesome, always enjoyable. The unpacking of Talmud — the historical explication and the modernization — is what goes on, mostly through conversation between the host and guests. Highly recommended!

    Thanks for brave Sharansky quote
Thank you for your courage to point out the indignity of today’s political correctness and citing our great hero Nathan Sharanskyi Congrats on being nominated for the Next Big Idea book club!

    Take One every day…
Love this podcast! Liel, as someone who is in the process of conversion and has a desire to learn as much as possible about Judaism, I just want to say thank you so much for making my days a little more Talmudic. 😊

    Terrific Podcast
An excellent program. Selection of material, host, and guest speakers are all terrific. Very high quality production. Worth paying for but it is free at least for now.

    Love Rabbi Dovid
I love getting a small taste of Talmud everyday and especially when R. Dovid joins.

    Thank you Reb Leibowitz
So grateful for this podcast. It reminds me of my learning experience at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem. I’ve missed this type of engagement with texts from Jewishly literate yet compassionate and critically thinking teachers. Thank you Reb Leibowitz for all of you efforts 🪬

Fantastic for newbies and the well-read alike!
Truth be told, this is the only Tablet-produced content I can stand to take in anymore. Unlike Tablet’s—and Liebowitz’s own—print content, Take One is happy, non-controversial, and non-reactionary. I recommend it to all the folks I meet interested in wading into Talmud!

    Scholarly Fun
This show is literally awesome. Full of mind, soul, and heart enriching content. I got here late, so I started on the very first episode and I’m catching up by listening every free moment.

    Great podcast
Studying Talmud is hard. It’s easy to get lost in the nitty gritty details of the discussion and miss the important truths being conveyed. Take One Daf Yomi provides clarity that informs my study every day.

    Love it
Such a pleasure to listen to. Makes you feel connected to these ancient texts, which by the way I studied for many years when I was in high school at a Jewish day school and I had no interest and could never understand and now I have this tremendous appreciation.

    So it began
I’ve heard of Daf Yomi throughout my life but it seemed to distant a goal. This has enabled me to dip my toe into the ocean of what is Talmud. Thank you Liel! להצליחה!

    How My Day Starts
Liel Liebowitz and his Daf Yomi learning start each day for me. This podcast is a gateway to learning I would not obtain otherwise. Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin’s deeply felt commentaries and teachings move me deeply. I am grateful this is a 7.5 year exercise!

    Great Host; Perfect Episode Length
I like being able to listen to each day’s episode while brewing tea or making breakfast. The episodes are quick and digestible. The host does a great job making each episode feel distinct from the others.

Find it a great way to start my day Really appreciate the wisdom

    Starting to fade
At the start of the Daf cycle the pod cast was strong. Now I feel there are a couple of issues: 1. Sound quality from a majority of the callers is very poor and I cannot even listen to the episode. 2. Self promotion of the “guest” speakers. They are promoting their new book, their podcast ect. Let’s get back to the heart of the Daf and focus on making each day aka podcast the best it can with the best sound quality from the callers.

    Great way to start day
Only recently discovered this fantastic podcast and now religiously listen every day

    Enjoyable daily Daf
Take One is an enjoyable daily podcast from Liel Liebowitz, known as a host of Unorthodox Podcast. Every show has a guest host. Topics are loosely connected with the Daf.

    A lovely reminder of God
I am a Christian, and always knew I was missing a great deal of cultural context when reading the Tanakh (really, both Old and New Testaments). I am greatly blessed by these conversations about the conversations about God’s presence in the minutiae of life.

I love this daily podcast <3
I am so happy to have a cheerful, welcoming way to Daf Yomi. Perfect for any Jew of any denomination to engage with the joy of Talmud.
  • D_Sat
    What an absolute joy...
I would have given 6 stars but Rabbi Dov Bashempkin does not have an entry in the Newish Jewish encyclopedia. Thanks Liel.
