Japanimation Station's Kyoto Vacation

41

Japanimation Station is an anime podcast where hosts Jonathan Lack and Sean Chapman, creators of Weekly Suit Gundam, create deep dive conversations not just on individual shows, but on complete bodies of work, approaching these shows not just as fans, but with a fresh pair of critical eyes. We get deep into the stories, characters, and aesthetics, but also place the series and their creators into the proper contexts of history, backstory, and behind the scenes details that make these works so special. And, hopefully, we’ll have some fun along the way. Welcome to Japanimation Station.

Great Way to Find New Shows
I initially started listening a few years ago to have a guide on UC Gundam because the decades of continuity made it rather overwhelming to approach. I found myself sticking around after they started discussing other shows and also checking out episodes of their main Weekly Stuff podcast due to their in-depth research and discussions. The effort they put into their research makes every episode interesting and has made me check out shows that had never interested me before. If you enjoy learning about the anime industry and film theory in general, this podcast is a great resource to gain a greater understanding of those topics and find some great new shows to add to your watchlist.

This podcast got me back into Gundam. Love the discussions. Would like to hear discussions of other Mecha series like Eureka Seven

    Will you survive?
Like many others, Gundam Wing on Toonami was my entry into the world of Gundam. I had watched several of the AU Gundam shows (00, Seed, IBO) up to last year but never any UC content. Decided to finally take the jump and started watching Mobile Suit Gundam. I found this podcast a few months ago and it is the perfect companion piece/travel guide for the Gundam universe. Love your analysis and commentary on Gundam! I just finished the last few episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam and this show is so fantastic. Listening to your episodes as I watched made my experience much more rewarding. Next up… Zeta!!! Will you survive?

    Seriously good!
This may just be my favorite podcast out there, I listen to a lot of podcasts on many different subjects and from all walks of life but there is something special here. The absolute passion of these two is infectious, couple that with both the breadth and depth of their knowledge and you have an experience that cannot be matched. Plus the chemistry between the hosts is endlessly charming, bolstered by the ease and skill of their conversational styles makes hours long podcasts feel like mere minutes, always leaving me wanting more.

    Awesome work
As a 25 year old Gundam fan this podcast is extremely important. A lot of care and passion oozes from this show and you will gain some real thought provoking insight into the themes and ideas behind the giant robots we all love so much. Keep up the work gentleman.

Brought up the series I thought were bad
I’m going to get this out of the way overall the content is great the more deeply analytical/ deep examination gundam is something I appreciate. Overall every episode(for the most part) has improved my overall love for every gundam show/movie they have talked about (exception being seed my feelings for seed somewhat staying the same at meh/dislike). The episodes covering ZZ and the alt universe stuff both episodes changing the way I see these series(I even did a rewatch of ZZ and I now get it) and going from saying you can skip these series to having them be considered mandatory watching. Overall my rating would be between 4 and 5 but closer to a 5 than a 4 so I’m giving it 5 stars

    Close to being great....
Awesome reviews of gundam... and then after the episode break it switches to “orange man bad” and “republicans r LITERAL NAZIS!” The virtue signaling cheapens this podcast greatly.

    Old Gundam fam here
Found your podcast today. I’m an old die hard Gundam fan (32 yrs old) and love the fact that this is out there to consume. Listened to the “ war in the pocket “ episode. I remember when it originally aired on Toonami, I had recorded each episode on VHS. That and 8th MS team were some of the best story telling I’d seen as a young teenager. Glad this pod is available and is hosted by equally passionate fans of the franchise.
