Very dry. Dryer than the Sahara in summer. I came for adventure on the high seas and to accidentally learn. Instead, we stood on the beach and I had to listen to someone that loves to hear themselves talk.

I’ve been listening for months, and neither hide nor hair of any pirates. Was going to ding a star, but then thought: Why? I really like it anyways and it’s one of my favorite podcasts that I quickly listen to when I see it in my voluminous feed. His writing is good, and he is a great presenter, and I like how he gives a real sense of the events he covers. And that theme song, are you kidding me?!?! Might be the best there is on any podcast ever.

...Matt’s tendency to veer into long diversions in background topics is not something I am a fan of. I actually groaned out loud when I realized that he was going to cover the Salem Witch trials is any detail, let alone in a multi-episode manner. This subject’s connection to piracy is beyond thin and it has been covered as nauseam elsewhere by better-qualified people. Two thumbs down to this unnecessary digression. 12/2/2024 EDIT: Matt, buddy - you are killing me and starting to piss me off. Talk. About. Pirates. Stop it with these endless forays through the weeds. We do not need hours of droning on about minutiae about every combatant in the War of Spanish Succession.

He knows how to tell a good story and does his research. Unfortunately he can go off on tangents that really don’t have much to do with pirates and then sometimes just randomly disappears and does uploaded for periods.

I’m an author who stumbled across this podcast while searching for information on privateering. I absolutely love the vast amount of information and the way in which it’s delivered. The subtle humor is so entertaining! One of my Favourite podcasts

I’ve learned more from this podcast than any history class I’ve taken.

I started listening to this podcast around September 2023, and immediately got hooked. I started looking into the people and stories outside the podcast, blabbing to my friends about obscure pirate facts, and I was even a pirate for Halloween. I stopped listening in January-ish as my life got very busy, but I refound it about a month ago and I can’t stop listening. As a high school boy with adhd it helps occupy my brain while doing dull tasks or even relaxing. Matt builds engaging narratives, and thrilling storylines from historical fact, and his voice is that of a seasoned campfire storyteller. Definitely would recommend.

great show, entertaing as well as informative. i’m 11 episodes in and i’ve only occassinally had to raise my historian’s eyebrow. one thing…just one item so far has irked me and sets my mind to wonder how often this may occur in future wpisodes. why, when explaining how the dutch states formed and operated, would we need to be told that it was mostly councils led by “white men”? we are talking about the low countries in the 14-1600’s, correct? at that point it was probably 99.9% white. good grief.

I got hooked to listen every time I need to my regular safety reports. Matt has a good voice and is a great storyteller. Do you have any materials available for children in print? Any story about Asian pirates?

History is fluid 🤩🤩🤩

What started as a great show has been going downhill. Episodes used to be 45 minutes to an hour, but now they're only 20 to 30 minutes. The writing quality has declined. If you're going to cover background history, you should do it in one or two episodes, like you did in the beginning. Just give us the important context and move on. No one wants to listen to 30 minutes of filler about some Scottish noble with no relevance to the main story. And waiting three weeks for a similar episode is frustrating. Either focus on the golden age of piracy in Nassau or switch to a different time period. I was skeptical about the Barbary pirates season, but it turned out to be a great story. If you’re not ready for the golden age yet, you can explore other time periods. There's so much more to piracy than just Blackbeard, Calico Jack, and Anne Bonny. You could talk about Black Sea pirates, Wokou, or The Pirates of the Andaman. The show won't run out of material because piracy has always been around!

I started listening about a month ago, and I can’t stop! Matt is such a great host, he so cleverly crafts all the episodes. It’s an absolute thrill to listen to, and it quench’s my thirst for history without boring me to death. I suggest starting at episode one. highly recommend this podcast:)

Listened from the very beginning, but I guess eventually you just couldn’t help yourself. I’d give ya 5 stars right up until you picked over the hypocrisy of Conservative politicians and ignored how your own side co-opts history too, like billionaire Nance Pelosi claiming to be the representative of the labor movement while refusing to recognize labor in her multi-million dollar businesses. But that’s the reality of history these days. Don’t worry, I have multiple options to listen to, but it won’t be this show or its advertisers.

I’ve been listening to this pod since 2020 (I started from the very beginning). There’s some great listens out there, but this is honestly one of the best. There’s nothing better than a high seas heist while on a long journey of my own!

Every morning I get the pleasure of walking my dogs in the quiet, twilight salt air of Beaufort NC. My favorite morning to walk is Wednesday morning because of this show. Nothing fits a waterfront walk quite like maritime history.

This is the best podcast I’ve ever seen, although it could use some more talking about real pirates

I’m catching up from the start by binge listening to this podcast and I must say the content and sound quality is amazing - you can tell lots of hard work and many, many hours of research go into it. If I had to suggest an improvement the only thing I would say is that sometimes the intro music is a little loud compared to the volume of the rest of the content.

This is a fun podcast rich in history and awesome story telling. You will not be disappointed.

I stumbled upon this podcast by accident and started listening from episode 1. I can’t believe the amount of history and information this podcast delivers. Additionally, I absolutely enjoy Matt’s holistic presentation of the material. Plus, all background information presented sets the stage and gives the listener a better understanding of why most historical events occurred the way they did. Finally, I wish history teachers and other educators would take a page from Matt…Thanks, best podcast yet!

Matt brings this period of pirates together in such a way that you’re there, right in the middle of it. His insight and overview on that period is way better than CNN is today!

I love this podcast and Matt is a great host. You need more pirates and subtle Star Wars references in your life, I promise. I can’t afford to donate but I truly love and appreciate this podcast. It’s absolutely worth the time if you like pirates and/or history. Also the music is fantastic.

I am a huge history nerd, and I absolutely love the story, the historical background, the speculations about possible pirate backgrounds or personal histories. About half way through and can’t wait to catch up.

I have been listening for a while now trying to get caught up to the latest podcasts. This is entertaining pirate history in story form (as I hear it.) I’m always entertained with each podcast and the little ditty’s and summaries added in here and there. A podcast worth listening to if you enjoy adventurous history.

I am really enjoying this podcast. I find the background history so fascinating. It is presented in such a way that’s both interesting and entertaining. The narration is very easy to listen to. Of course the pirates are so interesting and flamboyant.

I was liking the podcast but would rather you stick to the topic instead of providing your views on theories.

I typically only listen to sci-if, fantasy, fiction, or ttrpg podcasts, having a harder time listening to stuff like this. However! I have always loved pirates and go through phases of hyperfixations with them (adhd yaaay). I am currently in one of these and the amount of information is just so perfect. I have been listening nonstop for the past week and I am loving this show thank you 🙏
