Historic Royal Palaces Podcast

226

Historic Royal Palaces are a team of people who love and look after six of the most wonderful palaces in the world. This fortnightly podcast brings you the history and stories of those palaces. You’ll hear from our experts and the people who bring our palaces to life, as we create space to explore how history moves us, telling stories about the monarchs you know, and uncovering the lives and histories of the people you don’t. Just like our palaces, this podcast is a mix of old and new. Each episode will have a different feel, from previously recorded live talks, to exciting new discussions and discoveries. You’ll have every opportunity to share in the history we love. Explore more history and stories from our six palaces hrp.org.uk

    Elizabeth I
Thank you, Tracy for this 3-part podcast into the life of Elizabeth I from an atypical angle. She definitely was ahead of her times in many ways yet at the same time skilfully ‘playing ‘ the men around her. Yes to survive in a man’s world but also to succeed as she saw her role as monarch. You asked for topic suggestions. Are there any records of the lives and working conditions of the downstairs staff in the various palaces in HRP’s care? Such as the cook, various maids, gardener(s) etc. The monarchs wouldn’t survive without those folks and shedding light on them can be a wonderful insight into history.

Grace and favor apartments at Hampton Court
I just listened to the grace and favor apartments in Hampton Court. When you do such a podcast, please remember that we are not with you, and cannot see what you see. Please be more descriptive in your discussion of these apartments. For example, the size, in feet or meters of the rooms would be helpful. Do the apartments have bathrooms and kitchens? What kind of rooms are the 12 to 14 rooms?

    Six Tudor Queens
I loved the episodes about the Six Tudor Queens. The guests were fabulous and having the discussions in places associated with each Queen added a unique layer. Please also do this for Mary I, Elizabeth I, Jane Dudley (nee Grey), and Elizabeth Tudor - the remaining Tudor Queens.

Fantastic new series on the Tudor Queens
I’ve enjoyed this podcast in the past, but Tracy Borman’s new series on the Tudor queens is fantastic. How wonderful to listen to historical people, places and ideas discussed by world- class historians.

    I love it
When I read Tracy Borman is involved, I know it’s going to be a good show to watch/listen to. She never disappoints. This show is no exception. Listening to it strait through!

The Six Tudor Queens-Katherine of Aragon
Just a brilliant discussion with Dr. Elizabeth Norton. We are given the opportunity to view the world of the Tudor woman and her role in it. Katherine of Aragon happily discussed as not the discarded wife but as strong woman. With a couple of interesting questions I’ll leave for the listener. Well done! Looking forward to Anne Boleyn.

    Thanks
I am beyond thrilled that I have found this podcast because I greatly admire Lucy Worsley. She has such enthusiasm for her work and it is contagious!! She seems at times to be able to read my mind and answer a question in my thoughts thousands of miles away! When she was doing a documentary about Anne Boleyn’s arrest, she went through a huge door at the Tower of London retracing Anne’s steps. I thought to myself “could that actually be the same door Anne walked through?” and a moment later Lucy faced the camera and explained research had been done and confirmed the Anne passed through this same door- I got goose bumps!!!! Congratulations to your whole team for the amazing work you do! My best regards to Lucy!!! Sincerely, Maureen Labuda

I love how intimate this podcast is. I feel as though I’m getting a private tour from historians. I’ve learned so many interesting facts.

    So fantastic!
Love this podcast. The knowledge that is shared is amazing. I especially loved the episode I. Which Matthew Storey talks about the ceremonial dress collection - his enthusiasm is palpable!

    Whispering questions?
The interviewer for the episode on “Behind-the-Scenes in the Conservation Studio” should reconsider if whispering is appropriate for a podcast. All the conservators she interviewed spoke clearly while the interviewer literally whispered her questions getting quieter and quieter as the podcast carried on so I had to keep readjusting the volume when the speakers changed back to her. Why would a person in an audio program choose to whisper during production? Or why didn’t the engineer in post production adjust the sound so all of the speakers could be heard at the same volume? I really enjoyed the information, and the questions were thoughtful, but all that whispering (an attempt at ASMR?) really spoiled it as an experience.

    Great history
I live in the United States and have never been to England. This podcast gives me some great history lessons. Thanks

    EXCELLENT
This is just a fabulous podcast! It’s nice to hear about Tracy and Lucy in the 21 questions and the fact that they’ve NEVER lost their passion and enthusiasm for history. I, for one, would LOVE to hear and learn what the PhD students are researching. Thank you all so much for bringing this to light more in-depth for myself and perhaps sparking an interest for others.

    Fascinating!
Wonderful listen about history and historic buildings in the UK. Thank you for such a well-researched podcast. Absolutely fascinating!!

    Royal Palace Podacast
Just finished Ms. Worsley presentation of the Kings staircase and I was briefly transported back to this past June when I visited England and Kensington Palace. Thank you for this podcast and the things that you curators do that we might enjoy such treasured places! Look forward to the day when I can spend a couple months in England! A Space I Love is Great!
I normally enjoy this podcast but the Space I Love mini series is at a new level - binged the whole thing in one go. Hope there are more episodes like this in the future.
  • pmerrell75
    An 8.5 on a scale of 1-5
Always a superior listen .. for those of us who may get into these places once or twice in a lifetime these curator talks from within the spaces with details .. you may never hear anywhere else . Something you can count on..

    Love this podcast!
As a history buff and reader of all things royal, these palaces are all on my bucket list. Not sure if I will ever get there, but listening to this podcast puts context to the pages I read. Please keep up the good work!

    Like being there.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this podcast. I feel transported and included in a special club. The “Places I Love” mini series is the very best. I just put my headphones on and get carried away in time and space with the most wonderful company. I love how descriptive it is and the audio quality is much better than the lectures.

    Excellent Podcast
I’ve been a fan on the podcast for several years. I have been loving the recent series, especially the new one “A Space I Love”. It’s always fascinating to hear from the curators and I can’t wait to hear more.
  • Really2me
    Interesting Lectures
Would be better as conversations or interviews, but these unique topics still are quite interesting in lecture format.

    The Best British History Podcast
The speakers make you feel like you are traveling back in time and visiting the period and location being described. The content is full of interesting and new information. Most of the speakers talk clearly at at the perfect pace to listen to. Definitely makes me want to visit every palace they tell us about.
  • Dtown0121
    Excellent.
When I saw these podcasts included- the Palaces; Dr Worsley and Dr Lipscomb I could not hit “save” and “favorites” fast enough! Best lectures around. Thank you!
  • kbrimer13
    Easily digestible segments
I enjoy the longer lectures but I also appreciate the shorter segments. The longer lectures are more coherent with one presenter and one topic. The shorter segments seem to be divided by speaker, usually discussing the same topic. I prefer this format when there is panel discussion. If I want more, I just listen to more than one segment at a time.
  • 04616
    Shallow
The presenters aren’t shallow, but the way they are presented is. I’ve never heard a lecturer make an adequate presentation in 10 minutes. History Extra podcasts are much better.
  • BlueBottleGirl
    Some are too short
I love the podcast but these short snippets lasting only minutes won’t cut it. Am I to find the rest of the lecture somewhere else?
  • Lgraz68
    Love love love
Love this podcast - the speakers are great and the topics fantastic. If you like Tudor and other royal history this is for you. I hope the podcast continues. The only complaint f I have is some are way too short.

    Thank you!
I have been listening for a few months now and I really appreciate that during this pandemic you are still releasing episodes. It brings some normalcy to life. I love your podcast!
  • MairiMoofah
    Really enjoyable
I love this podcast. It’s informative, funny, and easy to listen to. Some may have issues with sound quality, but I don’t find issue with it personally—these are talks given to a live audience. I just love that it gives me an option to virtually attend talks that, being in the US, I would never be able to attend! Keep up the great work!
  • Beak1978
    Sound quality is TERRIBLE
I don’t know what the microphone situation is, but please get something else! I thought it was just the first ep I listened to, but it’s not. It’s distracting and makes the shows unlistenable. Very sad- I love Lucy Worsley.
  • annmarie222
    I love Lucy!!!!!
Can never get enough of Lucy W and all of the other curators in this podcast!!! Much more, please!!!

Amazing history from my favorite historians!
I just found this podcast and I love, love, love it! I’m American and may never see these fascinating places but I feel like I’m closer to them having listened to these very informative and entertaining lectures! Only wish I could be there in person! Please keep these going!!

    Barely functional
These podcasts are fascinating. The sound quality and production is horrendous.
  • pheonixrss
    Excellent content but poor quality
The lectures and speakers are really wonderful - very knowledgable and well-spoken. However, the sound quality of the recordings is very often poor which really distracts.
