Pretty Messed Up

944

AJ McLean & Cheryl Burke are...PRETTY MESSED UP. Like everyone right now, AJ and Cheryl became friends on a zoom during the Summer of 2020.What happened next, you may call it fate...they may call it serendipity...we call it a disaster waiting to happen when they became partners on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Whether they like it or not they are stuck together now and have quickly realized they are...PRETTY MESSED UP! They will share more than just their dancing journey...they are going to share EVERYTHING...and we mean EVERYTHING with you. And, aren't we all at pretty messed up?!?!? Under the guidance, mentorship and watchful eye of their friend Rene Elizondo it's time for AJ AND CHERYL to talk. Sit back, listen and enjoy this hot mess as they sort through life, love, ups, downs, friends, frenemies, and the Rumba. It'll be like free therapy for you. Join AJ, Cheryl, and Rene each week because it's ok to be Pretty Messed Up.

    ….
Is AJ and Rene ever coming back? If not maybe change the name of the podcast and the thumbnail. AJ isn’t and hasn’t been on it sooo why is he still in the picture? Waiting and hoping they come back and this goes back to the way it was. And if not it would be nice to know… if there is no chance then I’m out

    UPDATED May 2022
I CANNOT STAND HOW THE CHANGE OF HOST WAS NEVER ADDRESSED!!! Please have the boys on for a goodbye episode and if things ended sour or that’s just not possible then don’t. But please, please address it without enough of an explanation for crazy people like me that it just kills me to not know. Lol. That being said I might have updated my rating to 3stars before this last episode, but I didn’t want to dock Cheryl so I just stayed quiet. I’ve tried to listen to episodes, and did, but I did not really think I was going to be an avid listener but the two girls that came on with her last episode flowed so well with her. I enjoyed, really enjoyed it. And I’m so glad I did because I’m rooting for Cheryl especially during this change in her life. I’m rooting for all of the original host to do well in whatever endeavors they take on because they seem like that genuinely care about others. CHERYL please consider working something out with the ladies as cohost or at least regularly scheduled guess, bi-weekly, monthly or otherwise. ________________________________________ Ok Rene! I see you. Coming out of your shell this episode! 🤗Hmm is someone shy in from of CherBear? Lol great podcast AJ and Rene’s bromance is sweet and funny. 👏 Cheryl is amazing too! She connects well with their guest and they all work really well together. This trio just works 👏 P.S. Noticed comments about AJs “You may have heard of us..” bit. Sheesh people let him have that. He seems a lot more down to earth and appreciative of his fans than most other celebs seem. I don’t imagine Justin Timberlake (or any other celeb that has reached the heights that either band did) would be half as cool when interacting with fans

    Subscribed for sobriety content BUT
I cannot stand DWTS. So if you’re not obsessed with Dancing with the Stars, pass on this podcast. Recaps of a dancing show no one watches in this decade, consume over a half hour of air time, and even entire episodes. If you love DWTS and also love the Cheryl Burke talking over guests, this is for you.

    Feedback
Hey love all 3 of you guys TOGETHER There is more flow, and it helps to hear everyone in a grounded state, lately CB love you, but you are interrupting the guests, and making this feel like more of banter in a rehearsal studio than a podcast that allows to actually get to know the people you brought on. Really wanted to hear Sasha and Emma, because they have had such interesting experiences and positive outlooks on life we can learn from. I mean Sasha helped choreographed Simone Biles olympic floor routine. Please just take this as feedback. Would be great to know an updates on whether AJ or Rene will come back?

I love listening to you guys, I really do, and I was so excited to listen to Sasha and Emma, but on Dancing Threesome there was SO much talking over each other with Cheryl- I love Cheryl, and I barely heard Sasha. But I had to stop listening because it was too much :/. Please don't take this as trashing, just some listener feedback!

    Great for DWTS fans!
I have been a huge fan of DWTS for years so I am so happy I have found this podcast. Gives you so much more insight into the pros! I am loving it!!

    Stop interrupting
Cheryl, stop interrupting your guests. Why even have guests on if you’re not going to let them talk and then interrupt to talk about yourself. Had to stop listening to the one with Sasha and Emma bc all we heard was Cheryl.
  • Aye Are Kay
    Stop interrupting CB
I heard about this podcast while listening to the dopey podcast when AJ was on. I listened to a bunch of episodes, but I had a really hard time because of Cheryl Burke. She interrupts way too much. It’s so annoying. And when she interrupts, it’s all about her. It doesn’t seem that she really cares about the conversation that’s already going on she just wants to brag about herself. Had to give it one star and stop downloading the episodes.

Great podcast, but add more humility
Edit 09/27/2021. A show about sobriety should NOT have a sponsorship from Anheuser-Busch as the first thing that plays! This is a huge miss, and very sad to see that sponsorship money speaks more than your personal ethics. This is a great new podcast helping to normalize discussions around mental health in general. AJ’s the biggest name, and his quip on every episode of “you might know me from this little band, we’re not a big deal” is getting cocky and annoying. Just say you’re AJ from the Backstreet Boys. AJ and Cheryl both tend to speak over and interrupt Rene since he’s more soft-spoken. Please be more aware of this and give Rene space to speak! *Edited to add that the newer add for Msculptneo is pretty tone deaf. Eating disorders are forms of addiction themselves and lead to so many other issues, so having this add about “looking your best” is disheartening.

Came for AJ; stayed for the material
As a true 90s baby, I’ve been a lifelong committed fan of BSB. I started listening to this podcast solely because of AJ. I somehow love AJ even more after getting to see more nuances of who he is as a person. I absolutely have grown to admire Cheryl and Renée, too. Listening to this podcast is like a second form of therapy for me. So many great guests and lots of insight for mental health issues. I have to admit that the Brian episode may have been my favorite thus far. It made me so happy to see how AJ and Brian communicate together with such ease. I hope this podcast is here for quite some time.

    Awesome
AJ is there way to contact the show? I think I have a story (my life) that you would be interested in. Just a little background. My ex bit my lip off and I went through some crazy stuff. I’m trying to get my story out there to help others. I have been a huge fan of yours and would love to share my story with y’all.

Dr Carole Lieberman should not be treating anyone
The episode with this lady… sheesh. Rene tried to reel her crazy in but she was having none of it. It’s good to have guests from all walks of life but this lady is not deserving of the title Doctor.

    Love Aj and Rene!
I am truly enjoying getting to know Alex on a more meaningful way than just AJ from BSB! Rene is wonderful and such a peaceful source for me. Thank you guys for being so open and honest! Love your relationship!

    I love A.J but....
I wasn’t thrilled with the way they seem to attack Republican voters, especially in the episode about narcissism. My question is, have you actually had a conversation with the other side, or are you just pandering to the mainstream? A large portion of his voters agree with the policies more so than the personality. Even if you don’t agree with them, it’s problematic to throw a large portion of American voters into the same category of narcissistic, racist, bigots,, etc when on a large scale, that just simply isn’t true.

Helps You When you need it most
Amazing podcast. Been a fan of AJs for 20+ years, and combination of him with Cheryl and Rene is pure perfection. I have been going through a horrible time, and having calm and humor and feeling I’m understood even when we don’t know each other. Love you all for the humor, the seriousness, and making my day better each day!! 💜💜

    Absolutely love!!
I absolutely love this podcast. I just discovered it last week and I’m lucky enough to be able to have headphones at work so I binge it all day!!! I actually only have 8 episodes then I’m caught up, I’m not sure what I’m gonna do when I have to wait a whole week for a new episode. Thank you all for being so open and vulnerable. I have recommended this podcast to so many already. My twin sister is a recovering meth addict and has been on/off since 17 (were now 34), currently she is 18 months sober and we’re incredibly proud of her but we also know the journey is just beginning. I have learned so much about addiction that I didn’t know or didn’t think of it that way and it’s been eye opening. I’ve also, thanks that’s to your podcast, decided to actually start going to al-anon meetings to get a better understanding of her addiction and how to best be there for her during her recovery and not be quick to jump to assumptions when something is a smidge “off”, and I don’t automatically assume she’s using again. So again thank you thank you. It’s wonderful getting to know all 3 of you on a deeper level. Much love! Amber

Why did you have to go there......
I really enjoyed this podcast but had to unsubscribe. I can tolerate a little politics. Your comments today were not something I want to hear in this type of podcast.

    🤯
Just when you think you know everything about AJ McLean because you’ve been a Backstreet Boys fan for 23 years, he drops that for most of his life, he wore socks during sex, and it shatters everything you thought you knew about reality. 🤣🤯 Love the podcast, love AJ, Cher-Bear, and NeNe! Keep ‘em coming!

    Rachel
You guys never let Rachel finish talking. I wanted to hear her story and all 3 of you kept cutting her of and kept talking about yourself and your own issues.
  • bawyoga
Guests don’t get a word in!
Love the topics, and you’ve had interesting guests. The hosts talk over their guests (and about themselves) to a distracting degree! Would like to hear more from the guests!

    Rachel Uchitel Interview
This was my first time listening to this podcast because I wanted to listen to Rachel’s interview. I have been listening to all of her interviews and find her to be a very strong, amazing woman. This podcast was just over an hour and I want to say that the total time that we actually heard Rachel talk was maybe 10 minutes total?!?!? The hosts wouldn’t let her talk. They kept interrupting her to try and psycho analyze her. AJ especially kept interrupting her to put his own personal story in the mix. There is a difference between making a quick comment to reference similar experience, but to totally take over the interview is really disappointing. Please give AJ his own episode so that he can have all the time he needs to share his story, because clearly he hasn’t felt like he’s had the chance!

    Pretty Meaningful
I started listening because I am a BSB fan, but I’m hooked because the content is so meaningful. They can be light and have fun too, but the guests and discussions have been very insightful, educational, and relevant to so many people’s lives. Very honest and open. I hope this podcast sticks around for a while. They make a nicely balanced team. Highly recommended! ... And I’m a busy mom of 3 so if I’m making time for something, it’s got to be meaningful.

Decent but need to workout some things
I was super excited for this podcast but I’m giving up on. Decent content and I mostly enjoy the their personalities, the podcast needs some structure. It’s distracting how they talk over and interrupt each other and the guests. They ask a guest a question then answer it for them over them or talk over them with their own story as soon as the guest starts to talk. Also, need to better introduce guests. For example, I had to look up Catherine and India Oxenberg because they did not give context of who the were and I hadn’t seen the documentaries they referenced. I hoped they would improve as time went on but no such luck.

    Great podcast
AJ, you really are an inspiration to sobriety. I’ve struggled for YEARS with my alcoholism. I’m currently active in drinking and struggling to stay sober. I have an AA facility across from my street, and I always see the members hanging out. I just found your podcast, and I only feel like everything happens for a reason. My goal is to get sober, again in January and attend AA. I’m just struggling, and this is the first podcast I’ve ever listened to. Lol I’ve been a fan of bsb since the beginning and you were always my favorite. I saw you in Denver on the DNA tour, and had tickets to the august show. Now I have to wait until next year. But, since I was 12 I’ve attended every concert to Denver. Even the concert Kevin missed (hahaha). I watched and recorded everything, had my room covered in posters. (You know millennial girl stuff lol). Anyways, I’d love to chat with you on looped. It’d be a dream come true!

    Great, insightful podcast!
Love the overall set up of this podcast and hosts!! I look forward to it weekly. Great topics and the insightful guests too. Rene’s voice is like going to relaxation therapy or meditation ❤️. Is there a way to adjust the volume when you go to break playing the PMU intro as it immediately doubles in volume like it’s going to blow my car speakers. Also, it would be helpful if the talking over and interrupting would stop- it’s quite annoying when a guest/Rene/AJ are making a great point and are cut off/interrupted, especially when the mic volumes aren’t matching.

    Cheryl, BE QUIET!
Potential for 5 star content if only Cheryl would shut up.

    Check your Advertisers!
Gave it a listen after hearing positive report on local news about podcast dealing with addiction issues. SO Disappointing to hear opening ad for First podcast is an online liquor “store”! (Repeats during podcast too). Really ?!?! You are actively targeting an audience of people struggling with addiction and you have commercials for booze?? Ever heard of the concept of triggers? Producers & hosts should check themselves & deeply assess their priorities & moral guidance in relation to what type of advertising supports this ‘show’. And I realized the news show that did a spot on this podcast was a Fox affiliate, so yeah, follow the money folks !! I’d like to say I’ll listen more to see how it evolves but I can’t spare the time when there’s so many other helpful & uplifting podcast options out there. What an unfunny joke; don’t fall for this!

    Thank you
I groom pups out of my home for a living and listening to you three brings great entertainment. Think the dogs love listening too 🤣hope you will continue long after Dancing with Stars. AJ sure hope BSB will go back out on tour. We are in Denver and our August show was postponed til Aug 2021. My daughter and I love BSB❤️

    Was this fate?
I have never watched a season of DWTS before season 29. I can’t stress enough how grateful I am to have tuned in and that this amazing platform was initiated from it. AJ, Cheryl and Renee, you have been the biggest blessing to me and I look forward to hearing your life experiences every week.

    The best Podcast
I love this podcast! This gives me such inspiration. I loved Backstreet Boys since middle school(I am 33) and I have loved Cheryl on Dancing. I am so glad you guys are doing this podcast. Thank you so much for doing it. Also Rene your voice soothes me so much!
  • rachway82
    Real!
I love you both! I heard you guys on Kaitlyn Bristows podcast and Cheryl, I have never respected, admired and related more to you than when you were being real about weight issues. I remember when they came out with those magazine covers saying you were overweight. I couldn’t believe it!! I was furious!! They were calling you fat when you were still skinny and fit! What was that telling us at home who are average. Having two girls who are built totally different, one tall and lanky, and one who is tall for her age but is already developing but is super strong is so eye opening! My youngest is not fat AT ALL, but has more muscle, and will likely be more curvey than my oldest. So their body images and how they view themselves at 8 and 11 is already a concern of theirs. They are both in ballet and have been for years so there are mirrors around them everyday in the studio. It’s so sad! I also was surprised to hear that you started your period at 9! We are dealing with this with my youngest who is already starting puberty at the age of 8, and likely starting her period within the next year. I have felt so overwhelmed with having my youngest start so young and how she’ll handle it. ALL that to say, I felt not so alone today because of you. I’m constantly fighting to lose those last 10 lbs, I have dancers with different body types, one starting puberty early... I just adore you (already were a fan of yours on DWTS) and thank you for being you! You are fit, skinny and beautiful!! You look amazing in every costume!! You are my body goals.:)

    Podcast/DWTS/BSB
I have been a long time fan of the Backstreet Boys ever since I was a teenager 20+ years ago. I was so excited to hear about AJ being on DWTS with Cheryl Burke. Cheryl is the best dancer on the show. You guys were so great! You definitely went home WAY too soon. I have enjoyed listening to the podcast. I think all three of you and your stories are very inspiring. Thank you guys for putting out this podcast and I hope that you continue it. AJ, why did you give up on the Country solo album? I heard you say you gave it up in one of the podcasts. My daughter and I really loved the songs you released so far. Boy and a Man and Give you Away are our favorites. I also loved your cover of Drunkard’s Prayer.

    Amazing !
I’m new to the DWTS world but after watching this season, AJ & Cheryl quickly became my favorites and were so fun to watch and I was very upset to watch them leave (agree, PMU!). Then I stumbled upon their podcast and now I’m hooked. They are so fun to listen to and so authentically themselves. It’s refreshing to really get to feel as if we know the real them. Renee, the voice of an angel and reason and so much wisdom. I love this duo so much! They constantly make me laugh but also share so much personal stories and experiences that are relatable but mainly so important to so many. Props to them for being vulnerable and sharing something so personal. You are all doing so great and I will continue to listen every week, thank you!

    My first time
Even tho I knew about podcast I just never listened to one until I heard about Aj and Cheryl's, I’m a huge Backstreet Boys and DWTS fan so it was a perfect reason to start listening and it’s so interesting to hear them talk about their career and life also I can’t wait for them to bring the BSB on the podcast.

    Breath of fresh air!
I am new to DWTS and have become obsessed with AJ and Cheryl! I found this podcast and knew I had to listen. Hearing about your struggles with sobriety and your vulnerability to share is refreshing and inspiring to end the stigma! Rene is a fabulous addition and love his energy! I look forward to this podcast every week!

    I love you guys ❤️💖
I love this podcast some much. This is the only thing I look forward to every week. From the guest to singing to hear people voices that I look up two. This podcast is the best ever. I live it so much. I wish we can see what there actually doing. Like instead of just the podcast they should record the zoom meetings. I would love to see there faces it would be amazing 😉. But anyways love this podcast so much . I highly recommend it to anymore who loves a laugh or need to hear information about sobriety and things that happen to them in there early life or current life. Love you guys the most❤️❤️💖💖

    Potential
Was skeptical, but there is so much potential here. Enjoying the guests and their insights. Very open and helpful having spouses explain their experiences too. I used to do a lot of dance, but I’m more interested in the conversations about addiction and mental health and in relation to upbringing and environment. Especially right now as more and more people are struggling and turning to any coping mechanisms they can find. It would be much more easy and enjoyable to listen to if the tone of the podcast was settled on either deep, super positivity, or just shooting the breeze with random humor. A little levity and comic relief here and there is great, but if this podcast is supposed to be about facing challenges and the reality of deep human struggles, then maybe be sure to always end on a positive note or something, instead of right when someone’s about to really get into the grit of a topic, just interrupting back to superficial conversation or interrupting to reframe whatever was shared through a “positive” perspective. It is very jarring to become invested in a story or insight and then have a loud interruption basically cutting off and dismissing what was about to really be explored. And I don’t know if it’s possible to do some kind of sound check beforehand? Cheryl often sounds like she is yelling, Rene is louder now. AJ keeps moving closer or farther from his mic so words trail off or just can’t understand what’s being said before it’s cut off by abrupt changing of the subject. Great idea. Much needed discussions.

    Love it!
Rene sounds like a true friend who is going to tell it like it is and we all need one of him. Love love love listening to Rene’s voice! I’ve been a BSB fan since I was in the 3rd grade, huge fan no joke my posters had lipstick on AJ ( don’t judge me) I had every newspaper/ magazine cutout that followed AJs highs and lows and just hearing and watching him now just makes me smile and know that prayers were definitely heard. Cheryl tbh I was never a fan of yours until this season when I feel like I’ve actually got to know you. This podcast is amazing to listen to, I feel like I’m just sitting around catching up with my friends! Thanks for making my day a little better. #teamprettymessedup #milleniumwasmy1stconcert
