The Three Questions with Andy Richter

3,065

Host Andy Richter asks the same three questions to each guest: Where do you come from? Where are you going? What have you learned? These three simple questions, when answered honestly and thoughtfully, are enough to provide a pretty complete picture of who a person is. The answers are what Andy always wants to know about people. This will not be a one-sided process, as Andy won’t shy away from getting personal himself.

    Andy is incredible.
Society needs to protect Andy Richter at all costs. He is the most down to earth and pure famous person/celebrity. He is so genuine and kind and just such a GOOD person. Love listening to him and hear about his opinions and his view of the world and society.

    Thank you
I appreciate your reposting Steve Albini. Hard to think he didn’t get to enjoy that downtime with his wife and cats.

    Andy for the win!
I’ve always been an Andy fan. His honesty, apt timing, and original comedic humor have always been welcomed. I love the format, the questions in that format, and his control through the interviews.

i figured this out a few minutes in. great interview however. thanks

Andy’s not cut out for hosting
There’s a reason he was always Conan’s sidekick. I love celebrity interview pods but Andy isn’t a good interviewer. He’s unprepared, interrupts to talk about himself constantly, and never has a thoughtful response to what the guest is saying. I like the 3 questions format and would keep listening if there was a different host.

    Film school!
Did you know Andy went to film school? That’s the secret 4th question.

    A good show but …
I love Andy… He’s got a great way of making these standard bio interviews more engagement with vulnerably sharing his stories along with the interviewees. But, at times his interjections and interruptions are insufferable. The episode with Moshe Kasher is Andy at his worst! He won’t stop with “yeah” “sure” while his interviewee is talking and while Moshe is sharing super interesting stories, Andy is cutting off his sentences and destroying the kicker of all his stories… like when Moshe was talking about his dad planning to paint again when he retired, and just as Moshe was drops that his dad died before he could get his 30 year old paintings out of this storage, Andy interrupts to ask a new question. Jesus, Andy! Just bc Moshe is telling a story about his orthodox background doesn’t mean it’s time for Andy to interrupt by describing the first Jewish ppl he met in elementary school, smdh. Please let the guests finish their sentences, Andy!

Sorry Andy, but Minnie is way better
Having a few Proutian questions is a good basis for a talk blog but honestly, what Andy Richter has done is so derivative and a pale image of a wonderful and fascinating person: Minnie Driver. Even her setup is better. Andy, have you even heard Minnie Questions yet? Cuz that’s pretty much perfection.
  • IworkInQA
    Andy's idiosyncracies ..
.. really lend themselves to this type of format. Dependant upon the guest, the conversation gets real, talking about things they don't necessarily talk about in other interviews. Obviously not every guest is gonna be up for real talk, or even real talk with Andy, cuz all they want to do is promote their thing.. but that is on the guest, and not Andy. Even in those instances Andy asks great questions to keep it moving

    Love Andy but…
I love Andy but he needs to work on his interview skills.

    Thank you, Andy!
I am so impressed! There is such warmth and humanity and vulnerability intertwined with humor throughout this podcast. Thank you, Andy!

    Tommy Blacha episode ruled
Andy is great, but I’ll get all my friends to rate 5 stars if you bring Tommy Blacha back as a regular. Chef’s kiss!

    Inadvertently great interviewer
I don’t think Andy ever set out to be a great interviewer, but he ultimately is because he’s able to show vulnerability and discuss his own shortcomings in a practical way that moves the conversation forward. And he somehow gets a a hugely wide range of people to open up and do the same. Inject Andy’s trademark humor and occasionally negative self talk and it becomes a really honest conversation.

    Great episode with Tommy Blacha
I’ve loved this show since day one. Long form conversations with Andy that can get pretty deep. I really dug the episode with his old pal Tommy Blacha. They have a great chemistry and are very funny together.
  • Young ‘un
Andy, can you please ask guests for book suggestions?
(..you mentioned you’d like suggestions. Might be fun in this writers’ strike to hear their thoughts on a good book?)

Crashed my car to this podcast
You know how they say your radio keeps playing after a car accident? I fell asleep while driving to 3Qs and totaled my car and sure enough, it’s true! I’d give it 5 stars because it’s a great listen, but I can’t listen to it anymore without reliving my car accident. Love you, Andy. Xoxoxoxo

    Happy w/o Denial! :)
I love this podcast. Highly recommend if you’re looking for some thing upbeat and feel-good that’s also not ignorant of the present state of humanity/planet/etc. Thank you, Andy (& team)!

    Refreshing, good listener, insightful
I appreciate Andy’s humility and openness and his point of view and how he listens well to the guests! I get so weary of podcasts with hosts who are going 100 miles an hour and don’t listen well. Andy is refreshing!

    Surprised
I didn’t think I’d like but one of the guests I searched led me to this show. He’s honest, engaging & just a fun way to kill an hour. I’m into almost all of his guests. Recommended :)

    I’m not paying him, but…
…Andy’s podcast has probably done more to improve my mental health than my actual therapist. Still not going to pay him, sorry Andy.

    Genuine and down to earth
I love Andy’s approach and love hearing about people’s lives and how relatable we all are. It’s therapeutic in a way.

    Andy Richter
You have been one of my favorites since the beginning of Conan's first show on NBC. Can you please have some of my other favorite podcast hosts "Paul and Sasha" from Community News with Paul and Sasha podcast on your show. You all would be so hilarious together.
  • Janice on Guitar
    Favorite bedtime show
I love Andy's casual conversation style, mixed with substantive insights. Andy's got such a great compassionate heart, I love when that comes through. And honesty about mental stuff. Of course, there are good laughs, too. My favorite podcast to fall asleep to -- then in the morning, search back to find out where I left off.

    3Qs and much discussion
When I opened up this podcast for the first time I thought, “3 questions. That’ll be quick” deceptive title. A bate and switch! The audacity! I was expecting a few minutes of shallow drivel and you deceived me into a rewarding listening experience! How….DARE YOU?! Really dig the show. One suggestion: cut the tune off at the end of the guitar riff and put just a little reverb on it so it feels natural—just a little added reverb at the end . The singing trailing off is awkward. However, at the end of the podcast it works fine. Thanks for making this show!

    oh Andy!
I love your show. Please bring on "Paul" and "Sasha" from Community News with Paul and Sasha. I want to know more about them. They are such a mystery and their podcast is so great. You would be perfect to interview them.
  • lifewaymom
    Arrogant and foul mouthed
Ok if you don’t mind f-bombs and foul mouthed host! What’s the point? Foul language in a sense of an actual vocabulary? Your disdain for the Midwest and “fly over” country is appalling! Typical arrogant Hollywood elite! No thanks!
  • Gdhrhfghffghydsgjjmike
    Outstanding!
Andy has a great casual interview style that ends up getting very thoughtful and deep with with cool guests! I love Andy’s take on things and it’s awesome to hear him stretch his interviewing and comedy muscles. 10/10!

    He Couldn’t Pronounce a Guest’s Name
In the few episodes to which I’ve listened, I’ve found several interesting and funny anecdotes, but I was really put off that when he introduced her, he mispronounced Sasheer Zameda’s name. That was really awkward, and I would think learning how to say his guests’ names would be one of the, if not the, most important piece of preparation he would need to do before each episode.
  • brandon4791
    Let the guest talk!!!!!!!
Should be called “3 Things Andy Doesn’t Like”. Orange Man, The Catholic Church, and other people who try to talk Every episode is the same tired diatribe Which is really too bad. Because he’s got some really great guests on here But I don’t want to hear Andy’s same old tired opinions and experiences over and over

    Great interviews Frank and funny
Even if it’s a guest I thought I knew very well and whose work I’m familiar with I always learn things I never knew about them before on this podcast and learn new things about Andy too. Andy adds anecdotes but never tries to take the focus off his guests. I enjoy the podcast whether I have no idea who the guest is or whether it’s someone I think I know really well. I always learn something new and the conversation flows so naturally with every guest and can go from humorous to deeply touching in an instant. It’s a real gem.
  • EwokOnFiyah
    Andy’s the Man!
I don’t listen to podcasts consistently, but when I do, this one is always in my top 5 to listen to. I am always entertained and love learning more about the guests on this show.

    Hello
Andy!! What an absolute delight!! This is my first ‘review’ although I’ve listened since the beginning and long time fan. I know there’s a team and research etc But it’s you. I appreciate your honesty. You share yourself. And are so inspiring. Most recently with your interview with Jenette McCurdy, you navigated such hard, triggering and painful topics effortlessly. With care, patience and such love. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. If you ever come to Alaska I would love to cook you dinner❤️❤️
  • Quietfun
Excellent, intuitive and provokes self reflection. I love it!
I’m really enjoying the podcast. It’s actually my favorite one. The level of conversation makes it a perfect listen that makes you think. You also learn details about people’s lives you might not hear elsewhere. Thank you, Andy. Keep up the great work!

    Great podcast!
Podcast with Jennette McCurdy was especially excellent. Thank you for all the great episodes!

    Julia Stiles deserves better
Andy keeps talking over her and interrupting and asking the most boring basic questions. Poor Julia. She’s amazing. Degrading to her.
  • Racheenieg
Andy shhh! Let the guests talk.
You have to let the guests speak. You talk over them, insert yourself into all the questions and don’t let them finish a sentence.
  • Antonius.Block
Love the show but not this new logo!
Bring back the old Andy face show graphic! The new logo looks like it’s for a show about collecting vintage oil cans or something!
  • Barry Bro 55
    Thank you for equal representation
Hi Andy, Thank you for being one of the few male podcasters who truly attempts to interview the same number of women as men! And you do it well—it’s a pleasure to listen to you. Your fellow ‘casters could take note… Sincerely, Half the human race

    Learned a lot!
Just finished the episode with Jason Kander and want to say how interesting and important it was. I usually listen for the comedic content, but this episode really grabbed me. So great to hear how Jason is doing and sending best wishes for successful book sales.

    Andy is the master
As huge podcast listener, there is literally “no one” that gets guests to open up like Andy. He is literally the master. Some of the best interviews I have heard, even when I don’t k ow who the guest is.
  • super suspish
Andy’s mic sounds louder than the guest.
It’s a bit more difficult to listen to the guest when Andy’s mic over powers the guest voice, especially when they are trying to talk and Andy is talking over them.

    Just. Love ♥️
Dear Andy, I know you don’t believe in God but I thank God for you. I hope that if you ever feel down and worthless, like we all do sometimes, please know that you make at least one person, me, so much happier on the days I thought I couldn’t go on.
  • SweetJinny
    Insightful, thoughtful, funny, entertaining!
Love the podcast. In a sea of mediocre podcasts, Andy rises high above the noise to give thoughtful, interesting and very funny interviews.

Andy is the best!! I am from the Midwest!
Listening to your podcast is entertaining and very calming. Andy’s voice is soothing. Thank you!! Listened to Henry Winkler today and he was cracking me up when he kept bringing up Barry. Andy said the people in the Midwest don’t listen to his podcast and he needs to know we do!
  • Letrain476
One of my favorite finds of 2022
The barometer for a good podcast in my opinion is when I’ve never heard of the guest and I’m still excited to listen to the episode. Andy is such a skilled interviewer that I almost always learn something new and interesting about the guests I do know.
